Came across this video that has a simple device that allows you to make long strands of "rope" from 2 liter bottles. Unfortunately, I don't understand a word of what they are saying, but the video shows the process well.

I thought this was pretty clever, and a good use of materials in a pinch.

It's a great idea!! Cut the bottom of the bottle off with your knife. Then slowly and carefully start cutting ribbon with the same knife by going around the bottle. Definitely a good way to use an extra plastic bottle in a survival situation if you already have enough water containers, etc. but are short on cordage or want something moisture resistant, such as for shelter construction.

Strong enough for shelter building i would think. water bottles may be a bit problematic though, they're thinner and have those grip groves in them.

That is really, really cool. It would be pretty easy to make one with a dowel, board with a groove in it and a utility knife blade (or better yet, a carpet knife blade which is much heavier).

They're speaking Portuguese. Its hard to hear what they're saying. The narrator isn't saying anything really important, stuff like "Now you look like a professional...the bottles really take up less space as a tape..."

cutter guy- "Look it falls already wound up."

off-camera - "How many meters do you get from one?"

cutter guy - "If you do it very fine, about 2 millimeters wide, you get about 40 meters. It's really strong stuff you can make all sorts of things, you can weave it into screens and make chicken coups..."

I see brooms made from this stuff all over down there. Mac

I attempted to make one this weekend, and man it didn't go well at all! I was using cheap utility blades that kept breaking (I was holding them in place with small nails). I'm interested in trying to make one out of common things we might have in kits.

So, a saw, small blade, maybe some nails or something. I'm report back if ever actually get it to work!

Try a carpet knife blade. They are much more stout than utility blades and have a nice elongated hole in the center so you could hold it in place with a screw and washer. They are rectangular in shape. Do a google image search to see what I mean.

..actually. ..one of those hookblade type utility blades might be good here being that the material would pull into it..

That was cool - THANKS for the translation.
