Cool little article and video on Yahoo! today about a SERE school. Seems to be pretty basic stuff though and maybe not quite as serious (or should I say SERE-ous ) as RAT or other schools. Gotta start somewhere though!
Looks like fun, but a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
I would hate to see someone go to a weekend class and then die in the woods because they "thought" they knew something that was "presented" at a class and not actually "taught."
I disagree if we are talking about SERE specifically. It is often used much too liberally among the survivalist groups. Weekend camping and other outdoor activities don't generally turn into such situations so survival is the only techniques that are taught. Of course this may not apply to those that decide to go on vacation in Iraq......can't help stupid.
Humans are pretty resilient when need be. A little knowledge may help them find some motivation to turn a bad situation into a less bad situation. I think a little knowledge is better than no knowledge. Of course all this depends on the instructors of the course. Whenever I teach some course matter such as this it must be stressed over and over again that practice makes perfect and it is a perishable skill. On top of that if I teach you to build a shelter or start a fire one way in a particular environment, it may not always work. ie. you may freeze before you get a fire started or your snow cave built. Don't get overzealous and just do what you can to survive and try to remember anything you can that may help out your situation.
Of course I may be way out of line and generally wrong since I didn't take the time to read the article. It wouldn't be the first time I put my foot in my mouth. Having had many training opportunities in the sere category as well as survival I like to think that I have a stake in this.
