I am about to order a custom knife. My first custom.

I want a knife equally good for preparing food as for fighting. In reality, you rarely get a chance to play Steven Seagal, hence I hold serious doubts to many of the new generation of so called "tactical fighters".

The best multi-purpose way out of this is to make the knife a double-edged bayonet with a neutral grip, thus I could draw it with either hand from any position and still be in the game.

I could in theory get me a dozen knives (I've sketched up about 40 knives I would want to get but in fact I can only afford one currently.) So what do you folks think is the best solution?

Yes, I am a soldier and I want to be able to use the knife as a weapon. Yes, I might need to use it for survival purposes if getting lost or alone somewhere during a longer period of time (a week or more). And yes, it have to be of reasonable size - about 15-20 centimeters.

whats the price range and you set on a custom?

what about one of these?

Great knives for the money and the warranty can't be beat.

Hiya,

The price rate is 0-750 $US.
The knife is to be custom made, both to fit my unique needs, and because most production knives in this category look way to macho then what is appropriate to gain the respect of others.

I am curious both about blade length, design (clip-point or double-edged) and what teeth/serration the knife should use, and so forth.

And where can I place the compass? I want FULL TANG and the butt is devoted to other things.

ahh.. you want a REAL custom knife... I see now.

How about the compass mounted on to the sheath? Never fooled with compasses really but wonder how well they will take the force of chopping?

dave

The knife is the last line. You dont get rid of it until you die. Keeping a compass on the knife, or the sheat, is optimal. But as you say it could fit better on the sheat than on the knife itself.

If you will be making a custom knife, first find a maker that suits your taste. Then shoot me an email and I'll help you through the process of making a drawing of the design you want. I've done this many times, always for free.

custom knife at $70 USD?
A little delusional no?

The only knife I can think of which may serve your purpose... at that price, is the Cold Steel SRK... definitely not a custom.

BTW, is this the same gris who is Vikingswordsman?

gris,

In Greg Walker's Battle Blades book, he recommends a full fighting bowie as the ultimate combat blade. 9.5" long with a sharpened clip, but all weighing no more than 16 ounces! Fast, light, lethal. ANd when that trio of words comes up, Jerry Hossom and his millennium bowie comes to mind ( www.hossom.com ) There are TONS of makers here who can help you out if you want a bowie. In greg's book, he also mentions that a good combination of cutlery to carry (if you don't want t pack a bowie) would be a folder for utility chores, a combat blade that will do utility and fighting if need be, and a pure fighter (double edged fighting knife). While Greg was in a sandy region, before things got hostile, I asked Greg to "update" his list of cutlery that a soldier would carry. Check these threads for more info:

Hmm... I can't find the other thread that I wanted. Anyways, Greg now really likes the Next Generation Vietnam Tomahawk from www.americantomahawk.com That combined with a folder and a combat blade would be a nice combinaion.

In short, I guess I am saying that you should be a bit more specific about what you want your cutlery to do, and then get a few pieces to match those needs. As I said, there are tons of makers here who can work within yoru budget. You may want to get a mixture of custom and production pieces- say an ATC hawk, a custom combat blade, and a real nice production folder.

Try a post in the Shop Talk - BladeSmith Questions and Answers Forum; Say you are looking for a Custom Knife to your specs. there are many custom knife makers that could make the knife that you want, and there are some on bladeforums that can do it at a good price.

If i had $750 to get what i wanted i would Order a Custom from the Busse Custom Shop, Busse has a forum here on BF, they tend to run about $100 per inch.

I would also check out the Chis Reeve One Piece Range, They seem to be closest production knives to what you want. They have Aluminum butt caps maybe you could get a machinist to make you one with a Compass in it, if that is something that you really want. They also have the new "green Beret knife" (dont worry they dont stamp it Green Beret), that wouldnt allow for a compass but has a similar blade shape.

Hi everyone and thanks for the great feedback,

The knife is designed for "general purpose" military use, and even though knife fighting is something I will rarely, if ever, encounter, I think it should be suitable for those needs as well.

Currently, I do not think it should be a bowie, although I agree that bowies - Bagwell bowies in particular - are fine weapons.

The knife I have in mind right now have two different serrations, about 20 centimeter blade, double blood grooves and a handle design not far from one of Chris Reeves, however, I want the knife 100% my own and not designed to fit someone else's purpose.

I am a lousy sketcher, but I'll see what I can do, and hopefully I will have the knife within the next months.

...and no, I'm not Vikingswordman. I'm 100% gris. (Swedish for 'pig', pronounced as 'grease')

Yes, I definitely misread...

You can get plenty for 750...

You should get more than you need at half that.
