I know this is primarily a knife forum but I was wondering if anyone else packs a little something extra to put some meat in the pot. If firearms discussion is not appreciated in this forum I apologise. I'll be glad to present my survival/camp gun info after I hear back from a few folks. Thanks!

I'd be interested in opinions also. The only firearm I currently own is a 40 year old Ruger 22 revolver with a 2 step cocking mechanism.

Are we talking hunting or self defense. People are encouraging me a lot to take a pistol with me out in the woods and I'm considering it.

My favorite all-around survival gun is a side-by side,12 ga. shotgun. (Mine's an old Steven's Savage) Can be used for everything from rabbits on up to deer, and works great for SD in a pinch. I prefer side-by sides to pump actions, they're much more elegant.

A close runner up would be a Ruger 10/22. For collecting rabbits, squirrels, birds, groundhogs on the cheap, it's tough to beat a good semi-auto .22 with a decent scope.

Same here.

I have an original 39.95 Ruger standard model, with the 4 1/2 skinny tapered barrel. It's a great shooting accurite gun, and after this amount of time I'm really used to it. I've carried it as a woods gun in cool weather under a jacket. It could put a rabbit on a spit very easy.

I Experimented alot with the "standard survival guns"The ar-7 , the papoose and read alot about the springfield m6 but what I recently picked up for my camp/survival gun is a remington spartan sideby side in 20 gauge w/screwin chokes and 24 inch barrels the gun is small enough and light enough to carry on a pack frame and it also comes apart rather neatly. like moon wilson said it is suitable at reasonable range on anything from squirrels to deer, moving targets are no prob. snd 3 barrels of a 20 gauge are more than enough to send the boogeyman packin if he decides to come around. My firearm also has seperat triggers so during a prolonged survival sit if one mechanism should fail I still have a single shot gun. I will be constructing a sort of "survival kit out of it over the next few days ...actually more of a grab and go kit I guess sorta v-shrake style any feed back would be helpfull..and I'll let everyone know how it works out.

Sorry I'm new to hear from the firearms forum....a side by side is a nickname for a double barrel shotgun where the barrel are alligned horizontally to one another as oppose to an over/ under, where they are alligned vertically.

Yes. Two barells are mounted left and right, either with a selector lever or dual triggers. As opposed to an over-and-under where the barrels are stacked one on top of the other. These can be had in shotgun/rifle combinations. My go-to shotgun for many years has been my old bolt action .20 ga. I doubt anyone makes them any more, but I have a pair of them. One has interchangable chokes, the other has an adjustable C-Lect choke. With it I have taken everything from quail and squirrels to ducks and deer. Shotshells are available for most any game.

I like having a 22 pistol during bunny season. Most times that means a S&W 63, sometimes a Ruger Super Single Six. I will carry a large bore pistol when I trek into one area where the cattle escape to. There is always a threat of lions around here. I usually have a 30-30 in the truck for coyotes and sick cattle. Other than those times I don't carry a gun, too much potential trouble.

Forgot to add; during the season an M6 may be along for the walk.

i have a colt targetsman and a 22/20 over under savage model 24.c its a camper spec. it comes in a little pac like the handi rifles do id like a 22 ruger in eather the 10/22 or the stainless auto pistol with a bull barrel there sweet

On Rare occasions if I'm gonna stash a pistol in my kit it's gonna be my Ruger 22/45.

But I am considering something lighter, maybe a S&W Kit Gun.

A friend of mine swears by the M1 carbine. I feel its too heavy and ammo isn't as easy to get so I go for the 10/22. If the need for larger game is needed maybe something in .223 or .308 but that's unlikely and can get a little heavier than wanted.

I have a 12 gauge Stevens model 58 that is like new, still has the case hardening on the bolt. I love those bolt action shotguns and scour pawnshops and gunshows for a 20 in good shape but haven't found one yet.

I have 2 guns that get the most carry of any of the others I have, one or the other is with me 90% of the time, a custom 22/45 with a tactical solutions upper reciever and an old, plain jane 75 dollar NEF 20 gauge single shot. Both guns fit me well, shoot where I point and I have the ultimate confidence in them. I have talked on here about survival guns several times but if I was going to recommend a serious survival firearm to someone it would without a doubt be a standard Ruger 10/22 with a quality scope. Chris

another decent possibility, I've been considering, for the future is a henry arms minibolt singleshot .22 lr the whole thing is approx 30 inches long approx 3lbs its stainless and has a synthetc stock and comes apart pretty easily

I like the idea but I have not been real impressed with the quality of the Henrys, look for an older chipmunk, same rifle built much better, also check out the Marlin papoose and CZ scout. Chris

BTW anything I have picked up made by CZ shoots like a house afire, in my mind some of the best bang for the buck rifles period. Chris

You can't go wrong with this little gun. I bought one at Bass Pro on sale for
150 bucks two years ago, My son took a few partridge and a rabbit with it just this fall. I thought it would be to small for me 6' 235lbs but I can hit a pop can at 50yds every shot.

In terms of weight whenever I'm gone backpacking or even just on a day trip in the woods I always carry my Walther P22. Sweet little gun, and shoots great too. VERY light weight is definitely not a concern. I've taken all kinds of small game with it at close ranges. It's all I need!! Sure would like to have a 44 Mag super Blackhawk though *drool*

I always carry a couple self defense firearms, whether city or forest, which could be used, if necessary, but not ideally, for hunting.

Occasionally I throw my Ruger Single Six .22LR with extra .22mag cylinder into my pack. That's a great meat getter.
