has anyone tried to make fish hooks from wood or otherwise? can you post some pics of survival fish hooks or lures you made.

well I started with some pieces of wood I cut from behind my house and shaped them with my SAK. I then wrapped them in waxed thread. what do ya think?

Wooden fish hooks will float, and end up upside-down, unless your bait is heavy enough, or you place sinkers near (or under) the hook to keep it down. Wooden ones can work, but bone is a better material.

I was told I would have to soak them in water for a bit before I use them or find a rock with a hole in it to tie to the line to sink it. what kind of bone? (aninimal or fish or does it matter. just any type of bone?)

I met a guy last year at a Stone tools event who made hooks with dogbane fibers, pine pitch and beaver bone. The line/rock sinker can work as well.

Here's a case full of bone fish hooks

I had some luck last summer with a primitive fishing rig made from a sapling and some cattail cordage. My wooden hooks were too big to hold worms, and they floated, so I resorted to modern hooks. The good news is the cordage was plenty strong!:)

Here's one the ones I tried last summer. (also, the J-shape is prone to breakage) Failure. :o

Those are some great bone hooks..... Black locust thorns can be fashioned into good decent hooks as well....Here's some wysteria bark cordage with a Black locust hook

I think Gorges are easy to make ... But the fish needs to swallow them fully before they work... THat takes a good amount of patience and timing on the part of the fisherman..something that can't be developed without practice, and Practicing with gorges will lead to the death of every fish sucessfully caught..just food for thaught.

man those bone hooks look awesome. can you carve bone with a regular pocket knife. I've never tried it.

Thanks Riley, I was just looking at some of the Black Locust thorns Bryan sent me thinking of things I could do with them.

I use locust thorns and soda can poppers, depending on the size of fish I'm after. A soda can popper with a spoon made from the soda can or a beer bottle cap is a good combo for things like bluegill and sunfish.

Though not found in nature what do you think of using paper clips?

Interesting use for the coon penis bone

SAK scissors on an old cola can have worked best for me. Just a matter of folding and cutting out. That said, I was being opportunist and using much smaller hooks. Some of those look huge. I figure you have species there I don't though.

I have used gorges made from bone, wood, plastic, metal and antler. They work well, and are faster to make than most improvised hooks.

During a lunch break years ago I made a fishing rig using a paper clip (sharpened with a leatherman file), gutted 550 cord, and a branch. One of my coworkers laughed as I made it. With bread for bait we caught about a dozen bluegills with it!!!
A sharpened paper clip is basically a barb-less hook.
