I went fishing today. A small pond near my childhood home. I first was using my regular fishing pole set up - but decided to change to my hand line. I think I was fishing too deep with my pole so when I went a little more shallow and closer to shore with my hand line - I really started catching some.

Here is my rig:

A protien shot tube with drop line stuff and assorted tackle. Today I used the bait I had in the tube (Gulp - natural color) and started catching bass.

I caught three or four 6 inch or so bass - not legal - but in a survival situation I would be very happy - and if a DNR officer wanted to write me a ticket - I would have him give me a ride home too! ;)

Then I felt something take the line - it was either a huge fighter or a larger fish. I set the hook (right in the lip) and pulled....

(Yes - I snapped the pic with him on the line) and then set to carefully 'reel' him in.

Here he is after I pulled him in:

Yes - that is a Blue Gill - and it is 13 or so inches long.

That is not survival - that is good eats right there.

Back she went (I don't NEED the food) and I went on fishing.

So, if you THINK you need a pole and a million dollars in fishing tackle you are wrong. You just need to be a little lucky and not picky about what takes your bait - and I think you can eat well.

Plus - hand fishing is a BLAST!

I thought that I was the first one to use that for fishing. Oh well. :D For hiking there are a whole array or uses for those protien shot containers. I have one thats going to be used for PJCB's. May buy a few more and just store tinder and fatwood in it.

I sold a kit with a smaller tube which is GREAT if you don't have the room. But the tube you see above fits PERFECTLY in my Klean Kanteen that I leave in my BOB for boiling water.

Good post, TF.

I don't know if I asked you before, or not, but if you wear your hankie on your head, do you blow your nose in your hat?? Just askin'. :D

Cool post brother ,I believe in having a fishing kit in all my PSK. all the local ponds, creeks, lakes in Texas how could I not toss a line in the water, easiest way to gather food w/o using alot of energy
Great post

Nicely done. I always keep a fishing kit in my pack and have caught many Bluegills using it over the years. And you're right Bluegills aren't just surviving, d@mn fine eating!

Thats awesome TF....I was just gonna email you about this. I made a setup almost the same as yours with one of those county comm tube vaults and caught 4 bluegill, and a bullfrog on monday with it!! All within about 2 hours. That thing works crazy good. I love hand fishing. I always have my kit with me in the bush.

Mine werent that big, but still a handsome meal.

Great job TF. You can now use that little Bluegill as bait for a real fish!

:p
