I went fishing today. A small pond near my childhood home. I first was using my regular fishing pole set up - but decided to change to my hand line. I think I was fishing too deep with my pole so when I went a little more shallow and closer to shore with my hand line - I really started catching some.
Here is my rig:
A protien shot tube with drop line stuff and assorted tackle. Today I used the bait I had in the tube (Gulp - natural color) and started catching bass.
I caught three or four 6 inch or so bass - not legal - but in a survival situation I would be very happy - and if a DNR officer wanted to write me a ticket - I would have him give me a ride home too!
Then I felt something take the line - it was either a huge fighter or a larger fish. I set the hook (right in the lip) and pulled....
(Yes - I snapped the pic with him on the line) and then set to carefully 'reel' him in.
Here he is after I pulled him in:
Yes - that is a Blue Gill - and it is 13 or so inches long.
That is not survival - that is good eats right there.
Back she went (I don't NEED the food) and I went on fishing.
So, if you THINK you need a pole and a million dollars in fishing tackle you are wrong. You just need to be a little lucky and not picky about what takes your bait - and I think you can eat well.
Plus - hand fishing is a BLAST!
