Survival Fishing Kit Reel and General Thoughts...

i prefer the cuban yoyos u can buy on the basspro website. i used these all up the coast of australia and they worked great. you can even cast them with a little practice.

You can take the Ray Mears idea, and make it on a piece of PVC. You can keep your tackle inside the PVC and cast it like Ray Mears does. If I didn't usually have a rod with me (avid fisherman here) then I would probably have a PVC version. I actually might still make one just to mess around with. If you want to hold off I can post pictures of the process.

I like the idea of the Cuban fishing kit - but I find my kit worked great:

I use one like that - it fits all my kit - and reels fast enough.

Nice, how big are those?

Marion

i have no idea about the basspro ones but in australia you could pick up a various number of sizes. ones that fit in the cargo pocket of your pants all the way up to huge ones that were about 12 inches across.

 This is sweet. I might have to use one of those instead of PVC. On "popped" pop bottles. Nice...

G'day Marion

What do you feel are the essentials?

IMO the essentials are going to vary depending on the individual and the species & type of fishing being done.

The kit I carry in my FAK is based on using about a half a dozen set lines, rather than actively fishing with a handreel.

The smaller hooks will catch birds & lizards so it's also worth carrying when away from water.

BTW, the ruler is in cm's :D

Hope this helps.

Kind regards
Mick

Mick,

I had forgot about the that sort of passive fishing idea, the trot line, good idea.

I'm going to put one of these together when I get around to picking up a small size nalgene. Plenty of space for fishing gear and general food gathering equipment. Watertight, and a widemouth would make access to the contents relatively easy. You could of course to it with a regular sized nalgene, but I'm going to do it with the small one and make it a dedicated food gathering kit.

Looks good to me.

I always wanted to try one of those automatic reels you set and leave. Never seem to get around to ordering one though.

That really inspired me.

I did not like the hobo/can idea, but I think the small Nalgene could work better for me, and I could put the other pieces inside, with other "Water" and "Sustenance" items.

Nice.

I love you guys!

I love fishing and regularly fish. All you really need is line and hooks in the kit. Not a good idea to roll mono fillament on a small diameter due to it developing a memory and tangling easily. Braided line is fantastic and strong for its diameter although cuts easily. I make the roll as big as the container circumfrance as possible and will even cut a former that fits in the container with short cuts around the outside toward the centre around the former, then bending every second tag off to one side forming a crude reel. I have even bent the kick out of the hook so they will lie flat in the kit, even in the centre of the former. Small hooks will catch big fish, big hooks wont catch small fish (within reason for a feed). I'll nock up something simple later and post pics.

A flat kit idea - my pics,

Make the former out of cardboard to size and add cuts.

Wrap line with hook and secure with sticky tape.

Fit flat in kit.

Stickytape some more hooks and maybe draw a fishing knot on the cardboard.
