Guys, I am new here. If you had a choice, which of the following FOLDERS would you carry in the field and why?

1) Strider AR
2) TOPS Magnum 747

Fixed blades are hard to get into certain countries and I want a BIG folder that will basically do the job.

I agree with Joe - don't go with a linerlock, a lockback will serve you better. Personally, my choice of a survival folder is a Queen Cutlery Mountain Man. 4 inch blade in D2 tool steel. Depending on handle choice they run about $50 to $70. And it has the added advantage of not having a tactical look to it.

I love my Queen Mountain Man. For something more massive, how about a Spyderco Manix in either of the lengths offered?

Could not agree more. I love the Queen MM. Great steel (D2 or 1095) and locks up well.

It's not as pretty anymore. I have used it more than a fair bit, and have nothing but good things to say.

Yall excuse my ignorance, but what is wrong with liner locks?

It locks up with a liner set in the middle of the handle. Under the right presser (or wrong depending on how you look at it) it can fold up.

This is just my opinion but, lock back are a little safer and stronger. I have used both, and "feel" safer and have more confidence in my lockbacks.

For a one knife folder senario I'd tend to use a decent sized SAK with a locking large blade+saw like the Rucksack and convert the screwdriver to a chisel.

I agree about using a large locking blade SAK w/saw. I have both the Vic GAK and Hunter models. Both are very capable knives for stand alone duty.

Lockback if you want a locker.

Plain looking, nothing fancy or tactical.

A good one but not a lot of money into it.

It's a tool, use it and if you lose it, no big deal.

You don't want to have a spendy knife taken from you in "certain countries"

"oh, that's just my pocket knife":)

Ck the history of the TOPS MAGNUM...s one of our members put his thru quite a bit more than most of us would do AND it came out a winner...ck archives!

I gotta agree whole-heartedly with Cliff and Longbow. Rucksack, Trekker, any of those types of larger SAKs with the locking blade.

+ one for the large SAK lockback with locking blade. If, however, you wanted a hard use single blade folder instead, I would suggest looking at the Ontario XM-1, or Ontario Hossum Retribution. They are both liner locks.....The Retribution's liner lock is a puny little 1/8" thick piece of titanium lol....I have and use this blade regularly, and do some fairly rough stuff with it.....no problems whatsoever.
