Just wondering what are the big dedicated survival forums out there on the Internet? and sites for that matter? Thanks, much appreciative of any replies.

I built such a place for Disaster Preparedness & Survival...it's not so big, but it sure is purdy.

www.equipped.org (Lots of practical information and a nice forum as well)
www.zombiehunters.org (Survival and preparedness forums, among many others)
www.survival.com/IVB (Lots of good survival information here as well)
www.bushcraftuk.com (More oriented towards bushcraft than survival, but much of the information is one in the same)

That should get you started. The four I listed are fairly popular forums and all have good survival information and discussions.

That's a great question.

Actually in the 3 or 4 months that I have been looking, I found this to be one of the best so far. It’s filled with helpful, experienced outdoors-folk.

For some reason, many forums seem to be dominated by a "collapse of society" or "doomsday" scenario and not a lot for outdoors enthusiasts. Not that I think there is anything wrong with that by any means – I mean, if something like that ever happens, I know exactly which people I’m going to want to contact!

Here are a few sites that I have found useful:

http://equipped.org – This is a pretty extensive website – lots of stuff there – don’t give up on it too soon. It’s a little hard to navigate, I’d recommend spending a couple hours there just to navigate the site and see what’s there. It is the major site on the subject as far as I’m aware.

http://www.m4040.com/Survival/Survival.htm - it’s a pretty neat little site.

http://www.mikespinak.com/articles/Essays/e995mypsk.html - this one is from another bladeforums.com member.

Check out some hiking and backpacking sites and forums too – those folks are all about gear and trial & error. You can really sift through the gadgets and gimmicks with those folks. Many of them have gone on expeditions where they literally have to live outdoors. They can teach you a thing or two.

Last, here’s a few gear sites:

www.lesstroud.com has a nice forum with many familiar names seen here. In fact, many folks seem to make the rounds. ETS has a tough forum moderator so be carefull around him. ETS has links to several good sites with forums. The irony of survival websites is the high rate who don't survive.

digispam, if "something like that" does happen, how do you plan to contact them?

Within 15 miles of my house I would have access to an essentially unlimited amount of guns, blades, ammo, vehicles, well water, and an impressive assortment of tools materials and know-how. (between myself, friends and family).

Walking distance if need be.

WOW!! I just checked out some of these links. Great sites!

One thing really bothers me, though. I've been bewildered by the amount of people on these survival forums who are completely lost when it comes to sharpening knives!! A cutting implement is the single most important tool in the wilds. I can't understand why the concept of keeping a cutting tool CUTTING is mysterious or even overlooked to so many outdoorsmen. . . .WTH!!!

Sorry for the rant. . . . but. . . .duhhh. . . wow! Yuh know what I mean!!??

I know exactly what you mean. I know guys with thousand$$$ invested in guns and boats and whatever else, that use a cheap $20 knife and never sharpen it. What's really funny is some of the non-hunter types who look at a field knife as some kind of grudgingly-purchased necessary evil. Like they'd really rather have nothing to do with a knife if possible.
