Survival Gear In Canada

I have a bunch on things I want to purchase, but haven't been able to find any place in Canada that has everything I'm looking for, and the stores in the US like CountyComm, CheaperThanDirt don't ship here. I was just wondering where Canadians get stuff their stuff at a decent price.

Hey getemboi,

It really depends on what you are looking for, but a good place to start is Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC). They have a number of storefronts and a great website. They are a good source for things like packs, flashlights, camping gear, PSK cases, and emergency supplies (space blankets, signal mirrors, waterproof matches, etc.). My current PSK features a whole bunch of items purchased at MEC.

You may also want to check out Bass Pro Shops. They have a decent online presence as well, and they carry plenty of useful survival items.

For some things - like ferro or misch metal rods or blanks - I have found it easier to order from the US.

It would help if you told us a bit more about what you are looking for, but note that there is a rule against 'deal spotting' on this forum, so if you are looking for specific suggestions on the best place to purchase item X, it's best to take it to PMs or stop by the Sunday night chat (see stickied thread).

All the best,

- Mike

Sorry, I should have been more specific, I'm trying to build my BOB/Camp pack. The pack I chose is a Maxpedition Vulture II in case your wondering what size it is.

For the little things I'm looking for a Wool Blanket, Paracord, Folding Saw, Fire Steel.

For the bigger stuff I'm unsure of what the ideal setup would be, but right now I'm looking at a medium sized Axe, Fixed Blade, Multi-Tool combo.

As for the Axe I'd prefer a Gransfors Bruks but they cost to much, perhaps a Wetterlings ?

I'm unsure about the Fixed Blade, but I'm leaning towards a RAT 4,5,6 ? Not sure which would be best.

And I have no idea who's making the best Multi-Tool or which is proven.

Thanks for the help guys, I appreciate it.

Any clue to what stores are around you?

Cdn Tire carries great firestarters, they have an eagle head or something on them, come with fatwood and a striker, great buy, something like $14.

For an axe, I would say Wetterlings, I have more luck with the head profile, and prefer it. what area do you live in?

Multitool would be a Leatherman Wave, or one of the Victorinox models. I would also stick to a 4" fixed if your packing an axe and multitool.

I dont want to get in trouble, so I may have to remove these, but Warriorsandwonders, DStactical and MEC are going to be the best bet for gear in canada. Sirmailorder, or I think it may be Cabela's is also a decent spot. If you have a Whole Sale Sports in your area, they have a great selection of AMK equipment that I can't recommend enough. Their first aid kits are first rate.

Any other qustions let me know, Im sure Bushman5 will chime up and give some more Cdn sites, I cant remember them all.

hey my fellow Canuck! have you considered a BECKER/KABAR?

warriors wonders ships canada wide and carries the BK-K7 or BK-K9 - both EXCELLENT blades

i would try wildernessoutfittersarchery.com dave is a good guy and has most of the stuff your looking for, for good prices he might be able to help you he is located in ohio us hope this helps

I prefer an Axe for chopping so the BK-7 wouldn't make sense, but I wouldn't mind owning one, I hear their tough.

I live in northern Sask, but plan on moving out west at some point. There are no stores around here that carry what I'm looking for, except for some small stuff, I figured it would be easier ordering everything than driving a couple hours and finding nothing at a reasonable price.

Thanks for the suggestion on Dave, I briefly looked at this site and plan on contacting him.

Oh, how do you send PM's on this board ?

Whole Sale Sports in Winnipeg has Wetterlings and a good selection of knives. Folding saw at MEC.ca
There are lots of places in Canada for knives...just depends on where you are and what exactly you want.
Paracord has always been a problem for me to find, there are some online places to check or you could use accessory cord from MEC.ca
For multitool I would go Leatherman...Canadian Tire has them....plus the fire steels.

Hope that helps

Craig

There is a thread in the Canadian Connection listing CDN distributors. I can tell you from your list that you won't find everything in one place. However, there are a few places that sell maxepedition at not too bad of a price. Lee Valley sells GB's but there are other good places in Canada too. Cdn tire sells firesteels that aren't as good as LMF and goinggear's, but you can just go there and buy one and try it out. I've had one that worked well and another that I just tossed.

If you send me an e-mail, I will cobble a list of places that will provide things. We can't post them to this thread because that gets close to violating the 'deal spotting' rule of BF.

Definitely try Warriors and Wonders ,great selection, prices and service.
Most of the knives i've bought in the past two years have been from W&W.
I live on the opposite end of the country and 99% of my W&W orders STILL get here within 3 days!
SIR/Cabelas and MEC have decent camping gear etc.
In the U.S both Goinggear and Edcdepot ship to Canada.
Also in the U.S ebay sellers Felinevet and JagrFannj have great prices and selections of Victorinox SAK's and multitools.
Of the map outfitters ships to Canada and has excellent stock and modded Snow & Nealley axes plus other neat stuff.

mec, seals action gear(expensive tho), wholesale sports, and your local army surplus store should find you most of what you want but online might find it cheaper

Thanks fellas, I will update everyone as I add to my pack, it will be an ongoing project that I'm looking forward too. :)

for your axe check out lee valley tools , they have a nice selection. They also carry quite a collection of other things you might want . they have a web site as well as stores in a few locations .

My local Canadian Tire has LMF Fire Steels... your mileage may vary.

For knives, I've had good luck ordering from the States.

Got my GB's at Lee Valley.

Got my Maxpedition gear at Seal's. (A bit pricey, true, but local for me, so I can actually check the stuff out.)
