I'm looking to get mself an excellent camp/survival knife of a larger size. I do own and love my Mora's but am looking for something a bit larger (6-7 inch blade). I have work from Justin at Ranger Knives and find it to be fantastic.

I do have something in mind (RD-6-7) and was wondering if a Recurve or Straight edge would make more sense as a camp knife? Am I overlooking any seriously better options in the same price range?

Any stories regarding camp knives and/or constructive comments regarding my possible choice are greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

I know I have fallen in love with my BK7, if you can find one that would make a very good choice.

Straight blade for a camp knife all the way.

A camp knife will be called on to do it's share of food prep. Slicing all the way through a tomato or piece of meat is better with a straight knife. Mincing food, same, same. They may exist, but I have never seen a recurved kitchen knife.

If you already have experience with Ranger knives, and already are familiar with them, and are happy with them, then maybe you have already answered your own question? ;)

One more for the Rat-7.. In 1095..

If you are willing to spend the money, look at Busse, Swamp Rats or Scrapyard knives, you can't beat their warrantee! If it ever breaks un-intentionally, they'll replace it for free!

Look up a member called CRKS. He might still have a few Becker BK-7s left for sale. $54.00 new with sheath.

Don't overlook the Fallkniven A-1. Great blade, great comfortable handle, a bit pricey, but worth it. I like the Rat-7 as well in D-2.

Ka-Bars are always worth a look.

I'm not a huge fan of mid-length knives, but my Ka-Bar does what it does, very well. All the knives others have mentioned have loyal fans, and there's a good reason for that. This "niche" is a buyer's market... there are lots of excellent knives available at lots of price points. Be careful, you might end up with a whole bunch of knives in this class :D

Yup. I admit, I have never used a recurve camp knife, but I have never felt I was missing anything with a straight edge.

Thanks for all the stories and advice guys! I figure at this point it's a matter of preference and I prefer to give Justin my business. After he's such a great guy to work with.

Thanks

Moodino, I am aware of your design and wondering if you could share some specs and pricing with me? Thanks for your help.
