just got a great little custom boonie by ******* (Dave is a one man shop, disabled Vietnam vet)- very highly spoken on several of the military sites

anywho, his boonies have a pocket like some of the vietnam era boonies did- you can store maps, high vis panels, mosquito head net, top secret documents :D- anything relatively flat

I took my headnet and put in a small ziplock and then squeezed all the air out of it- flattened to just a little more than a 1/4", I added four micropur tabs and a MRE beverage bag (~ 20 oz capacity) as well

fit in here very nicely

the net and water pouch/tabs don't weigh much- less than an ounce

and then used Stormdrane's idea for adding cordage, which gave me ~ 20' of paracord

I might even add a tiny baggie w/ a few REI/UCO matches w/ a couple of flattened tinder tabs

That is definitely a cool hat, and I am a hat junkie. (Been shaving my head for many years so I need the dome coverage :D)

Good stuff on the items in the lid. A $20 bill in a baggie goes a long way if you use it within spitting distance of civilization, you know just in case you need an emergency lap dance or something...

Nice hat. Does he have a site, where one can check out his headwear?

he doesn't he

here's one link

Link removed.

he'll make the hat to your specs, I added the grommets on the side so I could use a chin strap, his hats have a shockcord in the rear that is used to cinch down the hat- it's a great idea, just figured if it got really windy a regular chinstrap might be handy

you can see the shockcord in this pic

^kgd- I think that's a great idea, even if not within spitting distance :D

Does it have ventilation holes? I am a super hot head and need all the circulation I can get! I thought I was all set with my Tarp Hat, but I am really jonesing for a custom boonie now

it's got vents on the side

and then inside it's lined all around w/ a no-seeum like mesh, I haven't used mine in any kind of heat yet, but from the reports I've read from military guys using them it appears like it works pretty well

Thanks MT, I just sent him an email. Can never have too many hats!

The hats all have soft venting on the sides, a shock cord adjuster, hi viz panel pocket, mosquito netting inside to stop bugs that may come through the vents. I have the following fabrics: Multicam ripstop, Naval Special Warfare AOR2 ripstop,DCU ripstop, Desert tigerstripe ripstop; OD, Brown and Coyote twill. I also make German WW2 style M43 hats in the above fabrics;Rhodesian style neck falp hats, Bigeard neck flap hats, Berets; patrol hats. Other garments and fabrics will be offered soon.

Excellent, i need myself a shortbrimmed boonie hat. I have no idea what the different fabrics looks like though...im going to have to Google them.
