One very strong point of the Forums is learning from others, so I hope this stuff helps you guys out.

1. There is a new Fishing Lure on the market that is so good at catching fish that it may not be allowed in fishing tournaments. I think it is called tailwind, and what it does is it looks and swims just like a real fish, better than any lure before. How does this help the Survivor, if you have one of these in your kit it will increase the chances of you catching fish for food. According to the article up to 4 times more than anyother Lure. A test was done to prove this. Sorry I no longer have the article!

2. Petzl makes a Blinking/Strobe mode on there headlamps, turn the Tikka over so it faces the sky and put in Blink Mode, so now if say you have an Injury and can't move you just put the headlamp on upside down w/light facing the sky and BAM! Signal for up to 400 Hours!!!

Does the lure require a rod and reel to do it's thing? What species of fish will it work on?

Fishing actively with hook and line is useless (IMO) for survival.
Fish traps and/or gill nets are the real fish catchers, at least were I live.
Wouldn`t bet on using a fishing rod to feed myself on a wilderness walk, much less in a survival situation.
I have been on many fishing trips with no result. 4 times 0 is still 0:D .

I usually have more luck using gill nets. Thats why I carry a small gill net in my BOB.

The tip for the Pezl was good.

Are gill nets legal in Norway? In much of the USA they aren't anymore.

Yes, there are fishing Lures in some Survival Fishing Kits, So I put out the Info if it would help someone out.

This lure would work on Bass, and Catfish and just about any fish that will go after a smaller fish. I wish I had the article to give more information but I just read it in passing.

Yeah, I don't carry a fishing pole in my gear, but do carry flies and jigs, because they don't require a pole to use. Even though gill nets are illegal here, I have one stashed and know how to use it to my advantage. Fish traps are something I want to work on this summer.

I watched an Indian use a gill net once (He said he was allowed to use this otherwise illegal tool.) After placing the net across a stream, he sat down in an area with lots of small rocks within easy reach. Starting to his right - upstream - he lobbed rocks into the stream, working to his left - downstream. After ten minutes, he collected our supper from the net, releasing the smaller fish.

I have carried a gill net when backpacking ever since - strictly for survival purposes. Never used it, but I remember how.

The flashing feature sounds good.

:p If youre starving to death and choose not to use a particular method of food procurment because it violates certain sport fishing laws or regulations then there is something wrong with you and you may need counselling. :p

This has been my experienc also. I remember reading somewhere that you'd burn more calories trying to catch fish than you'd get from eating fish. I've seen 2 guys in a $25,000 boat with $2000 worth of gear fish all day and not have enough fish to feed a cat. In a true survival situation traps/nets are the only way to go.

fact is it depends on skill to some degree and if there are any fish in the waters that you are in. A gill net will be going in my kit soon!. I got the tip here on the forum(wish I thought of it myself:o ) When setting net you might have to get wet and this is usually frowned apon in a survival situation, but very affective. Then again if you "bottom fish" larger fish might be caught like Carp or Catfish. I've caught Trout with crickets and hoppers on the bottom and feasted. Being in the land of 10,000 lakes(actually 15,000+) fishing aint such a bad idea. Gear won't catch you fish, but skill will.:D

Rickj,
I am not saying this lure is useless, but there are many advertisements out there that claim thier fishing lures are soooo good, they are banned by B.A.S.S. and the like in thier fishing tourneys. I have found in many cases this is an outright lie. Also there will be a boom in popularity of these lures for a while, and then they disappear from the market (usually a good sign they don't live up to thier hype) these lures catch more fishermen than fish in most cases ;)
However I think you have a good idea when it comes to putting fishing equipment in a survival pack. I would suggest a small "spoon" type of lure, though. Many different species of fish are attracted to the shiny flash a spoon gives off, as it imitates so many different types of baitfish. In frigid environments, I don't know what the calorie expenditure to return ratio would be, but in other environments surely it would be a welcome distraction from boredom as well as providing a meal if you are lucky.

Hopefully though if I am lost in the woods I will have my Orvis 8.5 ft 5 wt fly rod and a good supply of flies with me heh heh :)

Just to correct a mistake in the original post, You need the TikkaPlus Series to get the Blinking Mode on your Headlamp.

Also, the article on the lure I was talking about said that an Independent Study had been done to prove how effective this Lure is. I myself don't walk around with a fishing Kit, Only a few hooks and weights but I put it out there for others who may use it.

As an FYI, the Princeton Tec Aurora ($26), Quad ($29), EOS ($31 - my favorite), and Apex ($65) headlamps all have blinking modes too.
