Let me know what you all think about my views on survival kit basics.
1. Gurkha Kukri (a real one) is very good to have as the big knife in your gear. Any one who researches the forum in other areas will see that I am a confirmed gurkha and kukri nut!
2. The British wire saw with rings. Very good bit of kit! never have tried to use it as a snare though.
3. The NATO survival compass(dry) miniture. You would not believe how many ways you can hide that little compass in or about your body.
3. American VS-17 panel marker
4. Camelback Hydration system
5.Tobacco tins are traditionally the container to use for survival items but I also like the watertight containers by a company called Safesport.
6. Shemaghs. Arab head scarves Have you noticed lately that Shemaghs are thge fashion item? I have seen a shemagh save someones life as a make shift bandage! A very practical bit of kit. I could go on but I have to go for now Ive got to cook some Gurkha Curry for some brave dinner guests my wife has invited over for tonight. More later Cheers!

What do you intend to pack your gear in?
where do you intend to keep it?
How much total pack/gear weight are you planning on?
Where do you think your kit will be needed? (ie.-mountains, desert, swamp, urban enviornment exct.)

I go any where Im ordered. The items I mentioned in the initial post are items in general that I have a good opinion of. What I pack, How much it weighs, Etc is a matter of what we are doing and where we are in the world.Cheers!

I find it curious you have some items designed to save weight, and some obviously not caring about weight. Personally, I would trade the compass up for a larger one unless you're worried about being captured, and really want a compass in captivity.
I am a big believer in H2O procurement, and would add iodine tablets and/or a small cooking container (canteen cup or something similar).
I would add a firemaking device of your preference. I have created fire with friction devices before, but would never choose for that to be my only method of creating fire.
My personal preference would be for a bandana or three over the shemagh.

And lastly, I would think about some things you might add or subtract in different environments. In some extremely arid places, it might be valuable to add extra water, and lacking bug repellent would have been a fatal mistake in some places I've been.

I'd think twice before wearing a rag on my head lately. But that's just me. And I don't understand why you want a dry, miniature compass that you can hide in your body. But the other items sound fine. Heck, all of them sound fine, I just don't understand some of the reasoning. Well, except the head cover. Don't like that idea.... ;)

OK! The items I mentioned are just some of the things I have used and have trusted. I did not mention all of the bits and pieces of kit that I would carry. At least no one disagrees with my choice of a Kukrias the primary knife. Keep the feed back coming though. Cheers!

hey PipeyCain, Sorry for all the questions, I misread your original post and thought you wanted feedback on a survival kit as a whole.
I have no experience with the specific gear you have listed, so I can't comment directly. I do keep a Cold Steel LTC in my BOB, and when I posted here awile ago for some feedback on it and my other BOB knives (Spyderco Moran drop point, Swisstool and Leatherman Micra), I thought the LTC would draw some flak, but no one mentioned it in their replys. For me the LTC is not realy my primary blade since I figure I could get by with just the Moran and the Swisstool in the vast majority of scenerios I anticipate. Allthough I have not used it much yet, I view the LTC as a sort of cross between a machete and a hatchet, and likely will not need it as a weapon (I have OC spray, firearms and a big walking stick for that).

No need for apologies Frank. I was expressing my favorite bits of kit that I have found useful over the past decade. My current GP duty knife is a Colubia River M16-14LE Tanto 1* A bit big to carry in your pocket but I am satisified so far. What kind of containers are you using for your personal survival kit/s?

Most of my survival gear is stored in three packs. For my BOB, I use a CalPak #5001 4900 cubic In. pack (California Pak may be out of buiseness, since their web site is down). This pack apears to be well made and I got it cheap on closeout (I may upgrade later when I can afford to).
For my gear bag for work, I have another calpak from the same closeout, this time a #T3025 4400 CI tote bag. I have some survival and first aid items in this bag to serve as an urban BOB, allthough I try to keep my BOB with me whenever possible.
For hunting and day hikes I have a Galls Multi Task Waist Pack that I use with LC2 pistol belt suspenders.
For small survival and first aid items carried inside the BOB and grear bag, I have been using clear plastic Rubbermaid containers - these are cheap, watertight, light, and being clear it is easy to find things. I keep my clothes and sleeping bag in heavy duty plastic trash bags to keep them dry.
I also often carry a CRK&T M16, in my case a M16-03Z. I am not very fond of linerlocks in general, but I do like the flipper, and the spear point blade has proven more useful than I expected.
