Survival Kit container question

I am looking for a waterproof container for a survival kit. I was thinking either an Otter box 2000, or some type of flexible waterproof heavy duty bag. I am leaning toward the Otter box, but I think it may be a little bit larger than I want. I think the OB 1000 would be too small. Pelican doesn't seem to have anything in the right size. I would like something around 5X3.5X1.5 . I was looking at the Otter Boxes at Triple Aught. Does anyone have one?I would like to be able to fit the container in a cargo pocket. I am leaning toward a hard as opposed to soft container.

U.S. MIL. Decon kit boxes are excellent and cost around a dollar. Most surplus stores sell them.

take a look at a witz box. they come in many sizes and have a neck cord if you want it. they are waterproof to 130ft?? most dive shops have them. they can be found at online dive shops also. many colors too.
I use a clear credit card size for my fish lic. it has room for about 4-5 cards. they also make them for eye glass cases. and a med size for king size smokes?? ID about
1x3x4,41/2?in. frediver<><

another vote for the decon kit box. cheap, dang tough and about the size you want. you could also try a Nalgene bottle, they make a bunch of sizes and shapes, then there are some little flat boxes, both in alluminum or plastic that have a wire "bail" that snaps over the lid on all four sides.

I'll second the Nalgene bottle. Keeps your survival Items safe, dry and in one place. Plus you have your H2o collection/canteen at all times. They also make a metal cup that fits to the out side of the large round bottle like the GI canteen cup so you can boil your H2o and cook.

Ethan Becker put together a very complete shirt-pocket sized 'always with you kit' using a tin box he found hard candy in. After packing it with goodies, he sealed it with duct tape. the box is similar to an 'Altiods' breath mint tin. I have since made a couple of other kits using Altiods boxes/tins. Work great.

I have been using a plastic box that Armalite sells. I got mine with an AR15 parts kit. They are OD green and have a nice seal ring on the inside. Great size as well. I have one on my belt all the time in a basic compass style pouch. Works great. If you would like a picture I will grab the digital camera if you want to see what it looks like.

Another great source for containers is your local Salvation Army, St. Vincent de Paul, and Goodwill Stores., Look in the handbag/luggage area for small zippered pouches, nylon/canvas brief style containers, such as are given out at a conference. Some even have a shoulder strap. These may be carried in your trunk or on public transportation w/o raising an eyebrow. If you carry a backpack in some military or camo style you will be looked over pretty closely.

As for the waterproof type check out the kitchenwares section and you will surely find Tupperware containers and metal boxes. The Altoid Mint containers are sometimes available for 10 cents each or in a pack of 10 for a dollar. You can do a lot with those little tins. They will be handy to carry in your glove box, outerwaear coat on a hike or hunting and give your kids one to start their own survival kit.

When evr my kids needed or still need a bag of some sort they can always count on "Bag Dad".

Hi,

If you want a big completely waterproof survival cannister try getting your hands on one of the AFrench Aircrew Survival containers with 6 clamps and a silicon waterproof seal.
I got one and it has a divider inside so I filled one side with medical supplies and the other side with every possible "survival" item I could think of and had in my possesion (still not enough it think

).

If you want to take a look go to my photpoint folder and go right to the end, there are 2 pictures of the Large WLSK (Waterproof Large Survival Kit) and pictures of my SRU21/P vest with some items

I ended up getting the Otterbox 2000 from Patrick. It turned out to be just the right size. Thanks for all the suggestions though.

Also thanks to Bagheera for some great firesteels, if you haven't gotten one from him yet you are missing out.
