I am looking for a kit. I am also working on putting my own together, but I would like to have a small generic type something along the lines of the BG/Gerber Ultimate kit. If anyone has some hands on with that one a review would be great but otherwise suggestions for others (or for that one) would be greatly appreciated. The multi tool is nice but not necessary by any stretch. All of the other stuff seems ok but I am not into buying junk either. If this has been discussed before and the question is old a point in the right direction would be great too. Thanks in advance!

Hi,
I found this website awhile back and thought they had a lot of interesting gear. They sell pre-made kits and gear to make your own kits. I've never bought anything from them nor do I own their products. I just thought the site was interesting. There are some youtube reviews of their kits if you search. Scroll down on website there is a ton of kits.

Yes, they have some great stuff, I like doing business with them, I bought there Survival fishing kit and a few other things from them, I plan on getting some more stuff from them.

Generally speaking pre-made kits suffer from trying to meet a price point so you get sub-par gear usually or gear you just plain don't need. My suggestion is to piece your own together though the adventure medical kits line is a good choice if you NEED to buy a pre-made kit.

I second the Ritter/AMK kit - it covers most/all the bases at a low price point + has room to add things to it - i threw in an emergency water bag, some first aid stuff, micropur tabs, spectra thread, snugged it up with some ranger bands and throw it in my pocket

I'm just going to give this a big +1. Build your own kit. Base it on your needs, so it will be less likely to fall short or carry non-essential weight/bulk. Build it from items you obtain, so you won't get junk. You'll be better equipped and are likely to have a solid idea of what you can/cannot do with your kit, and be prepared to use it. Plus it'll be easier (IMHO) to refine.

God bless,
Adam

If you buy a AMK Kit, either the Survival Pak or the plus version or the Best Glide Adventurer, and add a few extras, you will be just fine. Currently I have the AMK Survival Pak and I added some REI matches and striker strip, P-38 can opener, Sliver gripper tweezers to give it a little bit more muscle.

The plastic zippy it comes in is nice. Where can you get those? Sports Chalet used to sell those heavy duty ziplocks. I still have a couple that I'm using but I cannot find anymore. I've searched Amazon too. I should buy some of those emergency water bags but I haven't found those either. The AMK kit gets my vote but I would used some duck tape across the top just in case.

Thanks everyone keep em coming! :D
I plan on building my own and am working on it currently, I was just looking for something pre built in the interim. I have a bday coming and need to tell my grandmother something she can get for me and that BG kit was kinda right around what I was thinking hence my using it for a start off point... Something similar is cool too. I like the ones in the acrylic(?) canisters (forget the name) but they are kinda pricey for me right now. On a side note (haven't looked anywhere, just popped into my head while I was typing) what is the best way to store a compass? Are there concerns with keeping them next to or near metal objects? What can I do to protect a compass that I am keeping in a kit with metal objects? Thanks again.

Look at watersports dry bags (canoe/kayak).
