Inspired by the pocket organizer threads I thought I'd make a post about this "Urban Survival Kit" I put together many years ago. I chose to name it that because the intended use isn't to survive for days in the desert or forest, but for short time use maybe in a motel room during a power outage, a vehicle stuck in snow, to make temporary repairs while traveling, etc. It focuses on convenience and repair items mostly. Would be interesting to see if anyone else has done something similar.

Rather than dump everything out I'll just post a list of contents.
5" x 5" x 2" belt pack
Band aids
Alcohol wipes
Compass
Pencil
Multi-tool w/ pliers, screwdrivers, knife blades, etc.
LED flashlight
Cash in watertight bag
Envelopes for writing, fire starting, collecting samples
Magnifying glass
Waterproof matches
Rain poncho
Roll of antacid tablets
Whistle
OTC pain medicine (Tylenol, NSAIDs)
Needle and thread
Kevlar cord
Nylon cord
Candle (candle-lantern type)
Duct tape (rolled and flattened)
Can opener (K-ration type)
Aluminum foil to make drinking vessel, candle holder, etc.
Sharpening stone
Hot glue
"Bic" lighter
Zip ties
Velcro cable tie

Some notes: The multi-tool is a small Gerber. Cash -- if you don't have it you can buy it! Candle can help keep you warm in a stuck vehicle in the winter. Hot glue can be melted with the candle or lighter. Pretty good load of stuff for 50 cubic inches.

As I recall, I bought the little pack because it was on sale and I like little bags and packs. Then I tried to come up with a use for it and decided on this "survival" kit idea.

I have a backpack I use for the same type thing. I call mine the truck bag. Always a good idea to be a little prepared. Rain gear is sooo nice when you need it.
