I need some help. I am heading away for 3 months on an adventure that will see me in all types of terrain and need to decide on an all purpose fixed blade survival knife to take along on the trip.
Being a knife nut I have lots to choose from and only want to take one. I will be taking my Spyderco Military plain edge folder and Leatherman Charge Ti also for sure.
I have a Tom Brown Tracker (full size), wilkinson sword dartmoor knife, Fallkniven A1 and S1, a Lofty Wiseman survival knife, and a Chris Reeve Aviator.
What would you take?
Thanks for your opinions!

Fallkniven S1 and A1. Wear one and keep the other one in your pack.
If you loose your big blade knife you will have a spare one.
Someone in this forum said that it might save your day, or week. Well, you do have backup for the small blade but if you loose the big blade you are toast, knifewise.

You have the small edge with the LM and the Spyderco.
You need a quite big blade and that is the A1 or S1.
You need something that saws and that is a Laplander.

It also depends on where the expedition takes place, but a Fallkniven can not be wrong.
If you have to pick one, I would say the S1, but others would say the A1. The difference is in chopping power, but quality is the same.
Then when you come home you post pictures on the knife. Before and after three months expedition. Write a review and tell us if it was good or if you dumped in a river on day two because it was this or that or so.

Good luck, just dont forget the swedish firesteel.
Wear one firesteel and tape one to the Fallkniven sheath.

To be really, really safe, get another S1 or F1 and pack it with a compass (if that works), firesteel, tinder and some emergency food in a vacuum sealed bag or put it in a lamination machine so its totally dry and good. That pack stays in your backpack and even if you swim with the backpack, some unicorn eats your LM, the wicked witch of the north takes your pants you will have a dry and nice kit that might save your trip, if you dont loose your backpack that is.

I'd love to hear more about your planned trip.

One thing to keep in mind, knife laws in the various places you'll be visiting.

Best Wishes,
-Bob

About knife laws: even if you are walking or camping or exploring or whatevering I guess police, military, park rangers, security people would not throw you in jail for carrying an A1 visible when nearest person is 55 km away.
If you wear a good knife (not a murder death kill Rambo freedom thing) I guess you might even get compliments for your good choice of tool. But then there are nutty laws as well.
During tourist and hunting season almost anyone and his cousin is carrying knives openly in the shops, but then this is a small town with forest all around. Most people though use short sami knives or Mora 2K. Its just me and maybe three more people that use Fallkniven in this town :(
Most Norwegian people walking about "på tur" carry huge knives on their backpacks. Instead of a saw/axe.

welcome to the forums.... :D sounds like a fun trip....

the fallkniven f1 is an excellant choice.... also check out bark river knife and tool, they make a wide variety of knives with different handle scales.. also very affordable.....

Man you have some good ones to pick from.....Iv'e always had a soft spot for the Dartmoor knife !!!

Another vote for the Fallkniven, combined with the other 2 you mention, you should be good to go!

Have fun, and we want pic's of this adventure when your back!

Fallkniven for sure. I actually use an A2 and a bm 610 but your A1 and leatherman will cover the job. I had a dartmoor and used it for 7 days in wales intensely and in wet cold weather, i found the handle was too wide for intensive use, imo combo knives like that are for people limiting carry weight, like military/special forces. knowledge is the key to survival, a basic quality blade like an A1 and good skills.

If I had your choice and was heading out to where my life might depend upon my knife then my choice would without doubt be the Fallkniven A1. It might seem a little bit heavy at first but you will be surprised at how you get used to it. I would also include in my kit a Fallknven F1 for the smaller work and I always carry a U2 in my coin pocket of my jeans....never know it's there until I need it.

There are a lot of good knives that I don't have any experience with, however, the Fallknivens have "walked the walk" and always seem to get the job done.
FWIW, I have my A1 piggybacked with an F1 so they ride on the same spot on my belt.

Ciao

:D

Bark rivers Would be my choice. If your going with what you have Id go with the falk.

Do you have some pics of your Dartmoor and Lofty wiseman knives as I am sure some people on here will never have seen them !!!

Me: Charge, Tracker, and Aviator or S1. I'd leave the Military at home.

How long will your trip last?

Out of those, I'd definitely take the Fällkniven A1 along with the Leatherman. If you feel like carrying two relatively large knives, you could also bring the S1. ;)
