Hi!
I am new to the forum and pretty much new to knives too...

I am looking for buying my first knife and I could use some advice.

My requirements are:
150 bucks limit
Kydex sheath
Black coated blade
Must withstand abuse and rough handling - both in woods and urban setting...To be specific- cutting wood, batoning, carving a bit, but also cutting paracords, breaking glass, going through some metal, prying.... all the hard work...

I really do like tactical designs but I am not sure they meet my needs..

I did some research on my own and Becker BK2 looks like knife for me but I am not really sold on its design...

Are there any alternatives?
What would you suggest?

Thanks in advance for you replies.

If you didn't like the BK2's design, have you seen the BK-7? Still a very tough knife, it would carve a bit better than the 2, has a nice pointy clip point, and is well under your price limit from most online retailers which leaves some wiggle room to get a custom kydex sheath from one of many makers on the forums (I recommend Godspeed, his work is phenomenal).

My 7 with my kydex sheath I actually got hooked up on with the knife:

Check out the SYKCO 511. It comes in at under $100 without a sheath, so you should be able to get a custom sheath made over at our sheaths subforum and still keep the package under $150.

Search for TOPS: Dawn Warrior, or BOB knife

Theyre both roughly the same size... one has a secondary bevel, the latter has a scandi grind.

Welcome. My suggestion is that you first give some thought to what you mean by a "survival" knife. The BK2 is a great knife. But it sounds like you want to carry it in an urban setting. That's a lot of knife for an urban setting.

To me, there is no such thing as a "do-it-all everywhere" survival knife. And, unless you are somehow randomly teleported to different locations...there is no need for one.

You going to the woods? get and bring that BK2. People love it. You riding the bus to work? Stick a SAK in your pocket and a multitool on you somewhere.

You know where you are going. Prepare. Bring the specific, correct tools for the situation. They will work better.

Don't get hung up on the "one survival knife" idea...it's appealing but flawed...I've gotten sucked into that thinking plenty of times myself! Still do on occasion! :)

Check out Esee knives. I just got the Junglas and it's an amazing beast. In the woods I just need a smallish pocket knife, a larger folder in belt sheath and the Junglas.

For urban use I would much prefer the ESEE 5 over the Becker BK2, and the reverse for more woods use. My idea of a great overall urban and woods knife is my ESEE 3. Small enough to easily carry in an urban enviroment and can do just about anything most people need a knife to do in the woods.
