Hey I've been looking at getting a mid sized survival knife for a while. I'm thinking about 5-7 inches. I have a folder and a Cold Steel Kukri so I want something in between. Bigger than the folder but smaller than the kukri. I am sort of leaning toward the SOG Seal Pup Elite because I have heard a lot of good from it and I really dig the design. Here's a list of the knives I'm looking at. Lookin to spend about $50-$60 bucks.

Sog Seal Pup Elite
Ka-Bar BK2 Companion
Cold Steel SRK

and Maybe:Ka-Bar fighting(i know it' more of a fighting knife but how would it do for survival?)

:jerkit: Thanks! :jerkit:

General outdoor tasks, maybe shelter buildng, and fire making..and up .in the nevada mountains

My survival knife is too valuable to risk being lost or broken, however my field/camping knife gets to do the tasks you have mentioned. srk

It may be to small for your needs but I just picked up a SOG field Pup. Pretty good little knife for 40.00.

I'd go with the BK2 Campanion - it's plenty stout and will handle all of those tasks without any problems.
Don't have any experience with SOG's.
SRK is a solid knife, but it may be tough finding one for that price - in store prices around here run $90 ($80 on sale).

good luck!

Survival might be worth looking at a RAT/ESEE RC-4. It's really nice and didn't fare badly in the knife destruction test on YouTube.

USMC KA-BAR (your choice of handle grips) also very nice.

The KA-Bar as at your buget point the RC-4 is more but well worth it.

Our military has been surviving with a kabar for a long time, if you can't make it with one you might not be able to make it at all :)

From that list. the Becker BK2 CAmpanion is the clear winner.

the KABAR is just as well a survival blade as it is a fighter.

srk, if thats too much then bk2 forsure. i absolutely love my srk, i have it for something smaller than my kukri aswell.
