Hello everyone. I was thinking of buying a Cold Steel srk as a survival knife.Because i already own a Ontario Marine raider bowie but i kind of think its overkill with its size and all. however i have heard that you can really beat on these srk's and they can keep going,i guess my question is would you recommend one of these?.

Cheers!

I would recomend it. I have one and it has taken a beating. For the price it is a great knife.

I didn't care much for the handle on the SRK. Eventually, if you like the knife, you might want to look at replacing the handles.

I have both and love them both the bowie is my everyday knife along with a leatherman wave, I've used the srk alot skinning and chopping and they are both really good.

Here's another positive vote for the SRK. I've had mine for years and bought it from Cold Steel as a second. I've beaten on it, used it as a prybar, dug with it, dressed deer, etc. It's never let me down.

Well im glad that they are looked so highly upon, I really love the carbon blades with the epoxy coating very durable.im wondering if you would happen to have some pics of yours id love to see them.

Cheers

sometimes cold steel special projects has the seconds on sale, they are pretty good knives for general use, and they sell for about 32.00. you need to call them about the price. i habve bought a couple over the years and they are good knives at a good price.

i have had a couple and also have given them to friends and they have held up well. the only complaint i have is that 100% bug spray will make the handle tacky on the cold steel knives as they are made of rubber. it is pretty easy to get them rehandled if this is a problem. cold steel says that these knives are pretty popular with the guys in iraq/afghanistan also.

I have had mine for a while and it seems to be a real decent knife. The handle is my only complaint. I have also heard from my friend that it is popular with military personal going over seas.

The rep is very good, though have only handled it in a shop but can say they are nice knives and jjust then right size

I concur that the way to get an SRK is to get a factory second (nothing wrong that affects performance, just cosmetic flaws that most buyers say they can't even spot) through the Cold Steel Special Projects catalog. For the money an SRK factory second on sale (in the $35 or so range) is a good combination of robust blade, decent out-of-the-box edge, and affordability.

As noted, the Cold Steel aggressively checkered straight stick, very-square-corners handle doesn't appeal to all users, including me. IMHO the SRK is a good blade to treat as if it were a kit knife -- i.e. rehandle it and you've got a pretty decent knife.

Have it and love it. The handle does take some getting used to, but if you're not up to modifying it as RokJok suggested, you can and will get used it. I've got the original handle unmodified.

The SRK seems to be a well liked knife. I don't own one but people I know that have them really like their performance.

I correspond with a guy in Iraq that carries 2 of them, all the time. He swears by them. Not my cup of tea, but it ain't my knife.

I've been using an SRK for about 6 years or so now. Its a great all around do anything sort of knife. I've put it through its paces in a big way and can't recommend it highly enough. The knife is short and light enough not to be a burden (particularly on the LBV or web gear), but long enough to be an adequate chopper and leave plenty of room for batoning. It handles skinning and butchering chores well. I have quite a few more expensive and supposedly "better" knives that stay at home while I pack the SRK whenever I need a working knife.

I really like my SRK and would strongly recomend it. It is cheap and sturdy, and the right siuze to a varity of chores. I really like it's light weight for a 6" blade knife, making it easier and more comfortable to carry than many others. Becasue it is inexpensive there is no need ot worry about losing or damaging it. I got mine for $48 a few years a go from Whole Sale Hunter. I have also thinned out the edge improving it cutting ability.

Well, I am a new member here, and thought I should pop in and offer my two dinar (Iraqi currency).

Cold Steel SRKs are popular here. That is because they are one of only two fixed blade knives you can buy at the PX here in Baghdad, the other being the K-Bar combat knife, and most people prefer the SRK to the K-bar, including soldiers. We are paying $50 each for new knives, not seconds. I have two of them, as Randjack pointed out, and I keep one with me and one in my BOB. The knives are decent throwers, can be used to pry things with fairly well, can open a can up neat and delicate like or quick fast and in a hurry, and do a good job trimming meat off the bone, though a little thick for slicing and dicing chef style.

The sheath is a nice tool as well. It is very effective for toting the knife. I can wear it on my belt, on my ankle, on my arm, or across my chest, though this knife is not really big enough for me as a combat primary. I am looking at (actually have purchased one) a Swamp Rat Knife Works "Desert Battle Rat" sight unseen on the advice of some people I would rely on. I have found their reputation to be superb. When I get my DBR, I will post my reviews.

I also have a leatherman wave tool, which does 90% of my knife work. I have no doubts that my SRKs will work as intended, and I am hopeful that the DBR meets all my expectations.

For the money, the SRK is, IMO, a very decent acquisition. It will suffice as a makeshift concrete chisel without too much concern. It chops palm fronds fairly easily, and makes a pretty clean cut on my paracord shoelaces.
Man, it is hot here.
