I was looking on Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia webpage and here is some information on survival knives:

"Survival Knife
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Survival Knives are intended for survival purposes when lost in a wilderness environment. Military units frequently issue some type of survival knife. Hunters, hikers, and other outdoor sport enthusiasts also purchase and use great numbers of commercial survival knives. Some survival knives are heavy-bladed and thick; others are more lightweight or fold in order to save weight and bulk as part of a larger survival kit.

Origination of the Survival Knife
Previous to the late 19th century, outdoorsmen and military personnel did not use knives that were notably different from the knives used by butchers. Bladestock was relatively thin and the handles were often no more than two wooden slabs riveted to the tang. Around the turn of the century, Webster Marbles introduced the modern concept of the "hunting knife." These knives incorporated heavier blades, crossguards, and pommels. They very much resembled miniaturized bowie knives, in fact. Case, Cattaraugus, and other cutlery manufacturers soon introduced similar knives of their own and it is from these that the modern concept of the survival knife is descended. These knives along with machetes and bolos constituted survival knives as used by military, explorers, and outdoorsmen up through at least the 1930's.

During WWII, surivival knives were issued to aircraft crew, as it was a real possibility that these personnel might be shot down over wilderness or behind enemy lines. Lifeboats aboard naval vessels also frequently contained survival kits including knives. These knives varied in design from one branch of the service to another and from one nation to another. The majority of them were simply commercial knives purchased in bulk by the military. From the Vietnam-era and to present, purpose-built survival knives evolved. The serrations often seen on more recent survival knives are intended to allow aircrewmen to cut their way free through the relatively thin metal skin of a crashed helicopter or airplane. They do not function well as woodsaws nor are they intended as such. Those knives that do include functional saw-teeth still suffer from lack of blade length limiting the thickness of what can be cut when used as a saw. Other features, such as hollow handles that could be used as storage space for matches or similar small items, began gaining popularity in the 1980's. Custom or semi-custom makers such as Jimmy Lile and Bo Randall are often credited with inventing those features, but all of them can be found individually in earlier commercial knives. The movie "Rambo" may legitimately be credited with having created the market demand for large, serrated, hollow-handled survival knives. Knives of that description are even sometimes referred to as Rambo knives.

Some militaries, including the US, have redesigned the bayonet used with their issued rifle to include survival knife features. Historically, bayonets had functioned poorly as field knives, due to being designed primarily to turn a rifle into a thrusting weapon and only secondarily (if at all) to work as a field knife. The newer models function more acceptably for mundane tasks while retaining the capability to be attached to the muzzle of the rifle.

Different Types Of Survival Knives
There are many types of survival knives worldwide. Some American name brands are the Swamp Monster Survival Knife, Beck Wilderness Survival Knife (now manufactured by TOPS called "Tom Brown Tracker"), Shelbat Survival Knife, and the Jackrabbit Survival Knife. The Beck Wilderness knife fits jungle survival purposes, while the Shelbat knife fits desert survival purposes and the jackrabbit survival knife fits grassland/mountain survival purposes. It should be kept in mind, though, that virtually any knife can be a survival knife if it is the only knife one has during an emergency"

My main question is does anyone know anything about the Shelbat Survival Knife or the Jackrabbit Survival Knife?

That sounds like something a wannabe knife expert wrote. Thats the only thing I dont like about Wiki... , anyone who thinks they know can chime in, right or wrong. God bless free speach I guess?

Those knives may very well not even exist or may be old, old designs that are well out of production or they could be misspelled. This would not be the first nor the last wild google goose chase that Wiki.. has started.

I only recently had any experience with Wikipedia. I won't have any more .I had looked up chinese cuisine and they said there were 8 different types -- but they only identified 5 !!! In addition they've been exposed as a place where information has been intentionally distorted and some a vicious attempt to smear people's reputation ! Forget them.

Well, being able to edit the wiki is the point of Wikipedia. If you guys don't agree with what you read there, change it.

The info I would add would be no better than that which is already there. Thats my gripe, I want my info to be dependable and well researched by people who have a responsibility to be right.

I like Wiki for things like pop-culture, things that change too fast to be kept up with by normal means but for things like definitions, I prefer a more credable medium.

My guess is A) those 2 knives are no longer made, B) they are some cheesy swap meet junk. Wiki can be a good source of info, it ain't all bad.

Very true, not all bad.

I dont want to come off as a basher, like I said, I do use it. I'm just very sceptical of the info that I get.

Yeah, check out the awesome "Swamp Monster" that was recommended in the article: http://www.trueswords.com/swamp-monster-p-924.html

Hey at less than 10$$ that beauty cant be beat ! I hear it's even made of BG42.. and if you order two you get a free Rayskin sheath. :D

I love Wiki and think it is a great idea in the works , you do have to be careful on the info there , sooner or later the jerks will stop messing with it and move on to something else.
There are alternatives to Wiki for those that dont like it but , Wiki has info on some things you wont find anywhere else.

More reputable entries usually have links to sources they've used. Those college research skills still come in handy time to time.
