The Wilderness & Survival Skills forum discusses this regularly. Some good knifemakers participate there and also discuss their survival knives. I'll move this to W&SS.

Do you have any idea what you want?
blade length, shape, etc. There really isn't the best survival knife, its what works for you, and appeals to you.

Some people like a longer blade, others a shorter. Depends on what your planning on doing with your knife. You said camping/hunting/survival, and although I'ver never done it, I would imagine skinning small game like a rabbit for example, would be harder with an ESEE 5 than a smaller knife. yet batoning wood for a fire wouldn't as easy with a 2 inch knife, compared to a ESEE 6.

Also the ESEE 5 dose weigh a fair bit, but you may not mind carrying extra weight.

there are heaps of choices, maybe try narrowing it down a little with some specifics (if you know any more).

What do you have now? Your first "survival" knife probably should be a SAK rucksack or multitool.

As for big Rambo knives, pretty much ANY knife you see mentioned in these various threads will work. Beyond that, it's Ford vs. Chevy vs. Toyota chest-thumping. It's more about preference and style than anything else.

The Falknivens and Rats are good knives.

A ESEE-6 from Rat cutlery is a good choice for a 6" blade. If you want something shorter, try the ESEE-4, with its 4" blade. They have a lifetime warrenty that you can view on there website. The ESEE-6 will cost about $120, and the ESEE-4 about $95. For something cheaper, try a Frost mora 2000, or a condor bushlore. The mora is about $10, and the condor is around $25.

In the spirit of adding variety to your options, for a good inexpensive survival/camping/hunting knife, consider the Cold steel Bushman. For more conventional knives, Cold Steel and Becker have several option that will work for you. Cold Steel Master Hunter, SRK, or Trail Master may work for you as well as Kabar/Becker BK2, BK7, or BK9.

Whatever knife you decide to get, check always ebay for prices. If you are patient, you can get REAL deals.

Good knives and if you can find a Mora 2000 for $10 you should buy several. It is a great knife for the money but will usually be $25-$30.

I have a RAT-3 (now ESEE) and a Fallkniven S1. Both are nice. Between the two, if I only had one knife, I'd pick the Fallkniven since I like the larger blade.

However, for the same amount of money, you can get a custom blade made to your specifications. That's the way I'd go now.

All sound advice. If you're looking for a production blade, then ESEE, Falkniven, BRKT, Becker are all great choices. If your on a budget, then a Mora is the way to go.
If you can spend around $150-200, I'd head on over to our knifemakers' subforum and look at some of their work. These guys have tried and tested patterns, plus they can also build a knife to your design and specifications. It really depends on your own personal preference.

Here are the ones I rotate for woods carry depending on terrain and length of time out there. BRKT Bravo-1, ESEE RC-4, ESEE RC-5, Fallkniven F-1, BRKT Gunny, ESEE RC-3. All of these will serve you very WELL.

Falkniven and ESEE both make excellent knives.

The Bark River Knives Bravo-1 is a very popular all arounder.

I also like the balance and feel of the slightly longer Bark River Smoke Jumper.

But when I'm spending woods time with Rambo I strap on my BlackJack.

There's no right answer because most of us have different needs or expectations of what we think a knife should do. And, it depends on the environment you're in. Some guys like big choppers but if you live in the high desert like I do, they're pretty useless. I have two Fallkniven F1's and three Mora's as my main fixed blade knives carried on my belt. I also have either a Vic Farmer or OHT in my pack along with a Gerber sliding blade pruning saw. I feel well equipped with these tools for the places I'm likely to hike in and the situations where a knife might be needed. YMMV.

I'd suggest a Spyderco. :D

Are you sure about that Ty?I heard they used inferior materials.:p

I have the RC6 and RC3... like it was mentioned before... these are good knives... the RC6 is very good for camping since you can use it to process wood for a fire... you can split wood with a baton with a diameter as big as the blades length... you can do a bit of chopping and it is a very well balanced blade...

On the other hand, the RC3 is very small compared to the RC6... you can barely notice the weight on you... it comes with a very nice compact sheath system which gives you multiple carry options (so does the RC6)... it fits well on your hand and you can use it for small detailed work as well for bigger tasks... you can still split wood with it, but the size of the log has to be limited...

You should check out the ESEE subforum for more info on these two knives...

BTW, i got the RC6 for 112.50 shipped and the RC3 92.40 shipped...

I started years ago with an Air Force Pilots Survival Knife that I modded slightly.I have others now but that knife still rides in my car BOB. Very tuff, effective knife for the price.--KV
