and smaller Becker's
(light duty)

MORA!!!!! just not sure which one:confused:

as always I'm open to suggestions;)

I guess I should clarify I do not get much money so $80 is about how far up I can go:(

I have a:
18 inch tramonita (old)
CETME bayonet
2 recon 1 pocket knives
and a leatherman wave

Becker BK9. And some sweet micarta handles to replace the factory scales.

Beckers are popular for a reason. I like the 7 also, but don't care for the 2. The 9 is a real gladiator, though.

Plus they are American made unlike others on your list, which is kinda cool this time of the year.

Bk9, bk16 and a bk14. Then all ur sharp needs will be satisfied.

If you are interested in actually using, just get the Mora and spend all the rest of the money on actually getting out there hiking/backpacking/camping so you can really use your knife.

If you are interested in backyard survival, I dunno, get whatever gives you the most forum/youtube cred I guess.

Honestly. I'd take a hatchet or hawk, and a multi tool. Throw in a 5" blade of your choice. And if its the jungle a $4 machete.

What exactly are you "surviving"?

A good question indeed. In my mind, a "survival knife" is a tough knife you keep on hand in case you find yourself in a worst-case scenario. And I feel a BK2 or an ESSE5 fits my idea of a survival knife perfectly. The reality of it, though, is that "survival" is just a buzzword applied to attract low-info buyers just like "tactical" or any number of other words applied to a variety of items.

Surviving is different for different environments. A BK9 would serve me well in the forest but would be less useful in the desert if there isn't much in the way of trees.

I just purchased a long thin carving knife for survival.
I took my kid to a birthday party on the weekend, & the children flew into a rage when the household didn't have a suitable knife for portioning the cake.
Most dangerous situation I have ever encountered.

Indeed. Many times I've longed to be stranded alone in the woods than whatever I was doing that involved children. :D

All honesty I am moving away from large knives, so I won't recommend the 9..

A machete is better at clearing than a 9" blade and will do just as well or better at chopping.

I got a Laplander folding today and boy, it's a game changer. I don't know whether to chop or saw anymore, my emotions are torn. But still, I got a good bit of play in today and found both the machete and saw useful depending on what the task at hand was.

Put more time into your midsized list, for me, this is the ticket. I need something heavier than a pocket knife fir serious whittling into hard dry wood and smaller than a machete for "working" task as such.

My mid-size at the moment is a KA-BAR 1247 Warthog, looking into getting a BK14 to go even smaller and hope it's just as useful in the same roll as belt knife.

Fir what it's worth, I am getting a BK2 as a pack knife.

For a Mora,..511? Thats the one I chose, it appeals to me more as a utilitarian blade than a bother full sized belt knife like the companion or clippers.

If you want "heavy duty", weight wise and construction wise, get either the TOPS Mil-SPIE 3 or MIL-SPIE 5.

Heavy duty - Becker BK-9, but as stvpourciau says, the Bahco Laplander is a game changer and is lighter and cheaper than the Becker. Don't get me wrong, I love my BK-9 (and BK-7 and BK-5). The BK-2 is just way too heavy to be considered if you envisage having to carry it for any length of time.

Medium - Not a fan of any of your suggestions sorry. The mid-sized Beckers (15/16/17) would be a better go than those on your list IMO, but I would personally take an ESEE-4.

Light duty - Mora, a basic one like the Clipper/Companion. I have a carbon steel Robust and it's quite good too. Also check out the Becker BK-11 and BK-14, ESEE Izula II and Candiru.

If you would define what you mean by "survival," that would help us help you. Are you going to carry all three knives at all times?

Survival or bushcraft? Camping or or just outing in the woods? Plan ahead, always keep at least something handy. SAK and a small fixed blade or folding saw in a pack you can throw in the trunk or truck. Mora make good all around handy knife. Other handy stuff in a small tin or can. I saw somebody liked an old spam can with lid (did not know they came with a lid) or a coffee can. At least keep the bare essentials in a quick grab bag, your bug out bag.
