Survival knives have to be the best type of knife,IMHO, they can adapt to any type of enviornment, ("survival") unless you are some sort of Bladerunner or futuristic fighter I can see no reason for a "fighter knife" (this does no include folders) Survival knives can skin, cut, chop and pry, they are maybe not the best at this but they should be able to do it. What do you think of my opinion?

Hunting? Don't be a wise guy, what do you hunt with a knife?

Name it!

Edge, I agree with you. However, they are a compromise. Survival knives can do everything, but are not specialists in anything. In other words they can chop, but not as well as an axe. They can slice, but not as well as a thin bladed knife designed for slicing. They can pry, but do not have the leverege of a good prybar. They can hammer, but could never match a good hammer at this. They can penetrate, but not as well as an icepick.

On the other hand, some of the best 'survival' knives were originally designed for something else.

Some of the KaBars are 'fighters,' my Randall # 14 is a 'fighter.' The list goes on. My point is many good 'survival' (translated as wilderness) knives are blades that were not designed as such.

The words 'Survival Knife' conjure up images of Rambo taking on the world with nothing but some type of large wicked looking blade. In actual application of true survival events (anytime a life is in jeopardy), its amazing how many kitchen knives and pocket knives were actually what saved a life.

A real 'survival' knife is the one you have on you when the **** hits the fan and you have to use it to sustain life. Not too many folks walking the streets with a Rambo blade stuffed under their coat, so I would just about bet that a stockman folder has saved more lives than a 'survival' blade has.

Why are we always trying to survive? If things go wrong, I for one plan to live as comfortably as I can. If a knife can play a role in this good; if not, there are other tools that can help.

Survival knives are a genre not a function. All knives can help you survive. We all use some form of knife to survive every day (go ahead try to eat that steak without a knife). But, a "survival knife" is a type of knife exemplified by the RAMBO knives. In other words a survival knife is a knife like RAMBO's knife, in the same sense that a Bowie knife is a knife like Bowie's.

Its hard to say whether you are looking for a Rambo-like knife, or a general field use knife (a.k.a. camp knife, combat knife, trail knife, field knife, etc.). There are plenty of good general field knives. But, don't go by the name, its better to choose a knife based on your skills and requirements.

The Randall model 18 for example is a very good "survival knife." but, it was originally designed to cut through a plexiglass windshield, while carrying some perscription stimulants and pain killers in the handle. The hollow handle was a big plus, especially when the goal was to ensure that aircrew had something on their person when they existed their downed aircraft. The knife would either be attached to what they were wearing or in their hand when they existed the aircraft.

On the negative side, the model 18s sawback is far less effective on wood, it has a weaker blade handle junction than a full tang knife, and the round metal handle is less comfortable then a more traditional handle. Weaknesses, no not really, just some of the tradeoff that we will encounter with every knife we look at.

So forget the name and choose something that is best suited for your requirements. The humble SAK is usually a good basic choice for most.

I don't think a 'survival' knife must be a Rambo-type knife, or the hollow-handled, sawback variety. A survival knife is a knife expressly designed for use in survival situations. Any knife can be used to aid survival, but a survival knife was designed for the purpose, no matter what specific form it takes.

Within that class of knives, we must separate into what specific survival situation the knife is intended for. A knife designed to aid downed air crews will be much different from one designed to aid stranded mountain climbers, and that will be much different from one designed for watersports. All, however, were inteded for survival, so should be called 'survival knife.'

Pray tell you have no pockets for little items like fish hooks and matches so you need a hollow handled knife to keep this stuff right? What exactly do you mean by "Survival Knife" I thought that terminology went south when Rambo started carrying a solid knife by Hibben. What one needs to survive can very well change on a daily basis and most of us won't be running around in the woods building shelters. However most all of us will walk the streets of a city somewhere and there is where you will most likely be tested not in the deep woods.

I agree, but for a _very_ different reason.

All knives are intended to be used for survival. Knives are essential tools that perform life-giving tasks on a daily basis. I only hope that should I end up in a situation where my life depends on my survival skills, I am as well qualified as the knife I have with me.

I'm looking for the ultimate modern survival knife. It must have the following:
Big Screen TV w/satelite dish
Cell Phone
Internet Service
Fully stocked Deli
Stocked Cooler (large)
Bass Boat (fits in hollow handle)
4X4 Extended Cab sheath
Low Cost yet effective Divorce Attorney (who can fish)
heated john
and a sharp cigar cutter

Then all I will need is a bikini clad bombshell sharpening team.

Yes, this knife would be worth more than a hundred bucks!
