I'm about to buy a "survivial knife". I'm looking at the RAT 6 and the Ranger Knives RD7. I've heard good things about both. They are very similiar in look and, I'm sure, function.

They are made of different types of steel, though. The RAT 6 is made of 1095 and the RD7 is made of 5160. Is one steel preferred, in anyone's mind, over the other for this type of knife?

Any experiences and/or problems with either of these knives? Any and all feedback is appreciated.

P.S. Pricewise, I think they are about the same. The RD7 might be slightly less expensive.

Rc6 has just been released and I'm sure you will see many reviews of it very soon.
It is made by RAT cutlery.
Do not confuse the RAT cutlery Rc6 with the ontario cutlery RAT7, ontarios quality is shoddy and so are some of their buisness practices.
I'm sure you could fint plenty of reading on the subject here on the RAT cutlery forum, RAT makes great knives.

The RD7 is also a great knife, but you may have some trouble finding one until ontario starts making them.
You may be able to find one actually made by the ranger crew on the exchange though.

i would take the rd-7 in 5160 over rat in 1095 just because of the steel used. rat does make a very good knife though.

I have a Ranger and its great, probably my favorite. It is 5160, from my understanding 1095 holds an edge longer but its not as "strong" as 5160. (correct me if im wrong) Either way is a good choice.
