i was thinking futuristic today.

what if someone made this

this might be the future of fire making in the wild. plus it might make a good signal

Seems awfully prone to damage, overcomplicated, and prohibitively expensive.
 
There are relatively inexpensive lasers around now that generate a lot of heat in that beam. Carry them in a good case, handle with care, the idea could work. Obviously, fire can be so critical, a spectrum of means is best. Who knows what power sources await us? :)
 
I thought that but the only 300mw lasers I found were red

And I didn't want to go higher in the MW because the lasers get bigger as the power goes up

Anything over 100mw burns so I figured 300 was a nice number but if there is a medium sized 300mw green laser I am all for it

And about the price, If some people can dish out 800 bucks on a knife 150-300 dollars on a rugged waterproof laser is not impossible

Burning lasers are not as expensive as you would think

They can be built as home for cheap

unless you point the laser beam directly into the eyes of would-be rescuers and burn out their eyeballs.

an i'm guessing a 300MW laser will drain the batteries in fairly short order,
 
Aw, hell, just get a real light saber. Think about it, cut wood, metal, etc, self defense, visibility, and the cool factor alone of the noise it makes! Oh, wait.......

How about a flashlight? Seems to work for me. you could tape a lighter to it.
 
I think it's a bad idea. Now I don't know if 100mw can light a fire or tinder, but 100mw is already harmful to your eyes to the point you don't want to look at it for more than a few seconds.

Anything you're aiming at up close will hurt your eyes if you look at it. Now put in costs to fabricate

Anyhow, a $200 item for Fire making just doesn't seem viable to me when you can have a Butane lighter, firesteel and a block of fatwood and various tinder for that price
 
like someone above said its illegal to own anything above 5mw in the U.S.

with that said a 5mw GREEN laser would make quite a decent signal maker. anyone who has never had one a suggest you go on ebay and spend 5 bucks on one. they will blow your mind in comparison to red lasers
 
It it not a good idea. Say you have your tinder on the freshly rained earth. You turn on your burning laser, and the beam catches a drop of water on a leaf. The beam reflects the light back at you, searing your retinas and rendering you an incapable burden on society.
 
Bad idea in all regards. There's too much risk to the operator of the laser and especially to rescuers if you used it to signal for help.
 
Forget it then I was just saying some day there may be the outside chance a laser will be the new way of starting a fire

Maybe it will a system where you crack a retaining wall shake up 2 chemicals and it heats up and sets fire I know chemicals like that exist already it's just a matter of developing a safe compact disposable container

Maybe it will be a system based around the nine volt and steel wool trick
 
For all the (illegal) technology involved, would it really do the job any better than a Bic lighter or firesteel?

300 mw is suitable for engraving wood. It might start a fire, but you are probably going to need safety eyewear so you wouldn't go blind.

Using it as a signal might work, but you would need to be really careful where you shine it. Accidentally shining it at a plane would be very very very bad. Shining it at people would generally be very very bad.
