"Survival" Luxuries?

Many people I know pack all manner of practical gear into PSKs, WSKs, bug out bags, abandon ship float packs, and other survival kits. However, some of the things I have seen put into these bags could only qualify as "luxuries." A common one is a combo salt/pepper carrier. Others include tea, cocoa, or instant coffee, justified as "morale builders" or "pick me ups."

Some might consider toilet paper a necessary, others a luxury.

I am not disparaging any of this, a little luxury I carry in everything larger than an Altoids tin is miniature Tabasco bottles. I order them directly in quantity from the company at $0.50 per bottle, so I have them laying about the kitchen and my garage where some of my gear is kept. I wind up throwing them in whenever there is room to spare because I have eaten enough cooking of hikers and hunters to know better about most peoples' skills away from the kitchen, including my own. Competent field and ship's cooks used to be highly valued for a very valid set of reasons.

My rationale, (perhaps limited to myself and my palate), is that to me Tabasco can mask almost any nastiness in food, dehydrated, burned, or foraged. Were I going to down a live snake by biting its head off and then chewing on it, I am swigging some Tabasco as a chaser. Same goes for slugs, grubs, lentil soup, etc. It might even serve as a crude antiseptic, and could definitely be employed in other ways I haven't really thought about.

Do you carry/pack anything that isn't absolutely a universal necessity in any of your dedicated gear packs?

The only item I carry, that I'd consider a luxury is the rucksack. I mean, can you imagine carrying all that stuff without one.:D

Tea, coffee and cocoa are all stimulants, but when you add the woods, a campfire and a SHTF situation, they become a calming agent, allowing the individual to focus and think things through.

Oh, I guess I do carry a luxury item now and then. Gingersnap cookies for dunking into my hot cocoa.;)

chocolate, lots and lots. mostly snickers, hershey's etc. i can live without T.P. , chocolate, not so much. lol.

Sometimes I like to bring a pipe and something to smoke. Especially if others are coming. It's one of the only ways I can lure my friends out into the woods with me.

"Extra" food is always nice.

Salt, by the way, is more of an essential than a luxury. A bag of salt was regarded as an item for the frontierman's "necessaries" pouch.

I was thinking of the pepper as the luxury on those S&P combos.

Jeezus Boats. "...down a live snake by biting it's head off and then chewing on it, I am swigging some Tobasco as a chaser"

Man, have a little tequila with that :D

I carry a miniature pack of playing cards to help me pass the time if I stuck somewhere for a while...solitaire, poker with my three imaginary friends, etc.

CITRUS Usually in the form of flavored tea or lemon juice packets. wether its added to tea on a cold day or to water on a hot day citrus can be a real boost, espicially if you are feeling sickly.

Gatorade: i have issues with blood sugar and a packet of this stuff can help me recover quickly. then i down an energy bar to stoke the furnace.

In sar training we refer to these items as inducements to hydrate/ eat.

I kinda like to keep myself reasonably clean, so I like the little packs of "moist toweletts" to take a "monkey bath" with (Could double as T-paper too, I guess), Q-tips to clear the boogars and gunk out of my nose and ears, a toothbrush and some baking soda. If you're going to be around others, these items can make life more pleasant for THEM as well as yourself!

If I could dehydrate one of my cats, pack her along in a ziplock and rehydrate/revive her to sleep next to me at night, that would be good. Better than a hot-water bottle on a cold night.

Also, I'll die before anyone catches me without some Lawry's seasoned salt, Tobasco and some black pepper...
