Hey Rats,

New to the forum and have been a fan of my buddy's RAT knives for sometime. Finally got the money saved up and going to buy a few, and my girlfriend either bought me a fire kit or an Izula for xmas. I can't tell she just keeps telling me she had something shipped form the internet that I have been drooling over.

That being said, I was wondering if i could get a little info from the pack? I saw a sheath on the internet and in this forum a bit that was a leg mount with a fold out kit. I thought i saw "5/6" but I assume that was an indication it fit the RC5 and 6. Any help?

Welcome to the ESEE forum and Bladeforums, glad you're here.

I have the ESEE 5 sheath, its a 1 piece that comes with a little tin that goes in the pouch. I believe thats the older version of what's called the Molle Back and Pouch combo now. They are designed to work on the kydex sheath that comes with the 5/6. You can also get the molle back for the 3 and the 4 now as well.

This is my ESEE 5 SHEATH. That's not an ESEE 5 in it though.:D

Yeah I have seen those but it was larger and a Kydex sheath attached to the inside and it folded out and looked similar to the interior of the New (Latin American made ) ESEE pack kit. I am going to try and find the pics I saw.

That is it! Thank you Adaman04. Aaaaaand question time go!

How do you like it? Pros/Cons? Suitable for more than minimalist? Is it large cumbersome and on the leg or do you belt mount? If so could you mount it horzontally on your lumbar?

River Bear, it's a pretty well made pack but your going to play hell finding one. They were disco'ed and the redesigned version is yet to be a production reality.

The sheath insert was a fantastic design but left alot to be desired in use. (As you can see, Adam has an aftermarket sheath in his.

I could be mistaken, but I think Lost Mountain Iron Works is still producing them.

I'll see if I can drudge up some pics of the new proto.

I've also got one. It's a good minimalist kit for when you don't think you'll need it. Makes a great trunk kit.

Generally speaking, I'm more likely to take a small slingbag or backpack if I'm planning a hike. These times I just carry a knife in it's sheath. I had pouches on all my hiking knives, but have removed most of them for this reason.

As, a minimalist, unplanned event bag, it's great. Takes up little space, and for me, It's setup as a super fire kit.

I carry mine the same as adam, a six foot paracord braid sling. I like the pack very much, but it's hard to find the perfect niche for it.

Is that a bk2 I see? In an ESEE-5 sheath? For shame.... :p

That said, I have seen several pics of the -4 being carried in the 5/6 sheath/pouch. How well does it stay in there?

I believe those shots are all in 4 sheaths, with the 5/6 pouch added to it. I think someone have have put a 4 into a pack kit, but it was with a custom liner.

Gotcha. Is it possible to just buy the 5/6 pouch or is there a good 3rd party pouch that is equivalent for attaching to the 4 Kydex/molle system?

Yeah I had seen the ESEE pack kits Shotgunner look like they would be perfect. I wanted to go for something that I could attach in all situations including rafting. Anything large or cumbersome wouldnt work. SO I was thinking about some sort of lumbar mount wityh the capability for a leg attachment as well.

Lost Mountain is still making the sheath from what I can see from their site. (link provided by Adaman04) I have to make a decision and cost will be a factor I'll wait till they publish a price for the pack kit before making a choice.

Sorry, been a couple days behind on this thread.

The pack kit is pretty damn cool. Cool in a sense that it is practical without being too cumbersome to be useful. The original sheath insert worked with the 5 or 6 and had a shock cord you had to wrap around the handle. I 86-ed that and put a sheath I got from Shotgunner in there.

But as Dizwolf said, gear is a personal thing. I made the shoulder sling for mine because it was more than I wanted to carry on my belt. For short hikes where I might want to play with my knife some, it works great. Not something I would want to carry on my belt every day.

The new packs Shotgunner posted look cool but definitely won't be a belt pack for me. The shoulder strap would definitely see use with me. The way the two piggy back was a bit of a turn off for me but who knows I might change my mind. Mike made a thread asking for input and one of the big things for a lot of people was their knife needed to be concealed. Well once we get to that point we're getting in to man purse territory and not so much a sheath system. Which is fine too.
