What degree (total) are you guys sharpening your outdoor/survival knives to? I keep my daily folders between 30/35 but I don't think that would work well or last outdoors. Thanks in advance.

Ok how do you measure the angle ? serious question , I have always sharpened freehand , serious question .

I have just gone with shat seemed to suit the use the knife was getting that still took and held a shaving edge . Call me primitive .. I seriously do not know how to measure what angle I use , Id like to tho , just for giggles .

I've always used rods. Back in the day, we just had a wooden block with holes drilled at set angles for the rods. Now I use a Sharpmaker, which is basically the same concept with a plastic block, instead of wood.

I have an adjustable jig that I made for my belt sander. You could use also use a locking protractor to keep it simple on stones. They sell these at Home Depot: http://www.penntoolco.com/images/catalog/5215.gif
Before I made the jig I just glued this to the front of the sander (turn picture 90 degrees right) to recheck the angle of my edge every pass.
