I'm in Texas. Just curious if anyone knows of any good schools in my area or anywhere else for that matter? If you've been to one, please post a review. Thanks!

I think he is asking for anybody that has " actually" been trained at one. Not just reading about it via website etc. Luck

Jeez Texas and nobody has suggested Randall Adventure Training..... head to the RAT forum here for info.
great guys, great knives

I looked into RAT, but from what I can see they only have one class or so a year, which doesn't work with my schedule. I did Google, but I did San Antonio instead of Texas. Doh! And yes, I'd like some reviews if anyone has been to one.

I've trained in my local area until I exhaused all resources. Then I came to the conclusion that I want to fulfil a specific set of skills and knowledge and I'm not going to let cost or travel limit my ability to gain the neccessary skills I need. So I've had to wait two years in order to save up enough coin and time to go but I've found that going to a school that meets my specific objectives far outweights the cost/time regardless of where the classes are held.

So, before you pull the trigger on a school stop and do a self-assessement. What EXACTLY do you want to accomplish? Who can best meet that goal? If learning how to bow and drill and build a debris hut that is one thing and just about every local yolkal can teach you that, but if you have a specific learning goal or objectives then try to match the school to your needs. Myself I'd suggest augmenting your training with local for general skill/knowledge and then start planning ahead for the school that will best match your needs. Besides training is like Lays Potato Chips - you can't just attend one! Just a thought.

I agree 100%. I have plenty of knowledge with many years in the military and personal training under my belt. Unfortunately, I can't even find any local yokals just to brush up skills, learn some new things, and even find like minded folks to hang out with. But I'll keep looking!

Well what is it exactly you're looking for? Perhaps one of us can help and point you in a general or specific direction. There are some schools that specialize in specific areas such as Jungle schools, primative living, Plant ID, tracking, urban survival, and surviving in a economic meltdown and living in a hostile environment where most would rather kill, steal or take advantage of you than lend you a hand.

i went to Mountain Shepherd's Humble Thunder course last year (Virginia). i really enjoyed it. in fact, my feedback is posted on the Testimonials page. it's not a primitives course, but it isn't designed to be. it's based on Air Force survival techniques for short-term survival. if you are oriented toward a few (but simple) modern items (like a sheet of plastic) that can ensure survival for about 3 days, this may be for you. and it was a good mix of both relaxation and survival instruction. i can share more, if you like.

Not really a school but if you come to the Texas Hoodlum spring gathering I know you will learn something. All you pay are the camping fees and you are sure to have a good time and meet some fine folks from the area. If interested shoot me an email. wolf_rat@hotmail.com

When is this going to be? Are you part of 2 Wolves in Blanco? I checked out that website.

That is EXACTLY why I went to Oregon Firearms Academy.

I live on the East Coast and there were NO schools that were teaching Wilderness Skills in a Potentially Hostile Environment.

I had to save a bit to get there, but it was WELL worth it.

Learning how to bow-drill a fire, build a figure 4 trap etc. are great basic skills, but learning how to survive, while getting from point A to point B when someone may be trying to take what you have, or your life, or more likely BOTH is a bit more difficult.

You need to decide what your mission objective is. Are you looking for skills in case you get stranded somewhere with minimal gear or are you looking to learn how to survive if TSHTF?

Carl-
