survival sheaths

Does anyone know who was making the large leather survival sheaths for dwain carrillo/airkat apache knives? I read here a while back that he was using a third party leather guy for the sheaths. I have one of his smaller knives (if you want a comment on the blade, email me) and the sheath is one of the best I have ever seen. The larger ones had pockets for small items like a compass and a stone for the blade.

I'd like to get something like that for my EU-17 magnum or my BM. the good nylon survival sheaths on the market are too small for either one and I'd like to get something in leather. the custom sheaths I've seen are nice but the ones that came with the older carrillo knives are unique to the point I've never seen anyone else make anything like them.

I called carrillo and he said he wouldn't be making anymore as his business is now focusing on folders.

any help would be appreciated.

As far as good nylon, contact Dan at Semper Paratus Tactical, as I recall, he can make one custom fit to order for what you have. As best I remember Dwain makes his own sheaths and they are something to behold. If you have to have leather definitely contact Mt. Mike or Dwayne (Leatherman). The various means of contacting these guys can be found here:

Dwayne's leather work is incredible! I have one for my own EU-17 Magnum and this thing has survived everything I can throw at it with flying colours. It is beauty and the beast!

Different Dwayne entirely Peter. Leatherman's work is great too, but this is a whole other realm of stuff. Leatherman Dwayne's work is much more traditional where as Dwain Carillo's leather work looks more like it fell out of the Road Warrior movies to me.

I spent a few minutes today looking up those sheaths that Dwain did, I could only find one example and your dead on Gunner, wow! I couldnt see the sheath body for all the attachments and cord wrapped here and there. I have been rather traditional in my work huh, in my art years I was everything but traditional. Amazing how things fall into grooves sometimes, this falls right in with what I've been working towards recently, those changes in direction that I have been hinting at.

I need more pics of this fellas work, any links or pics of similar work would be much appreciated. A hybrid of this style and some of my own ideas, this might be what I've been looking for. As well as some of those more challenging carving projects......

Leatherman, check your email for a few pics. maybe if someone on the forum owns an apache model they would be good enough to send a few pics.

Wow, crazy :D

I prefer your traditional sheaths to be honest, leatherman :)

Thanks for the pics nyresq and crushenator! :D:D No worries, I wont change my style completely, there will still be the usual traditional work, but I am really wanting to push the medium more. I got the kydex fusion working well a while back and havent done anything more since then, I think its time I went to the next level and got something interesting going. :D

I have one of Leatherman's Leather/kydex fusion masterpieces for my EU17. I USE it and love it. It held up well after a rainy backpacking trip last weekend, I used my EU17 for wood chopping, food prep., cooking & digging. I cleaned the blade after each use and the sheath got pretty damp inside and out with no visible problems(leather loosening, knife giggle). My leather only sheaths have not held up as well under similar circumstaces. I give the fusion concept high marks in respect to durability and useablity - issues that have always been problematic with traditional leather. Keep up the good work Dwayne!

I agree entirely!

To be honest, I do not really like the design of that sheath.

If you want 550 cord why not wrap it around your sheath? (What is the point of the parracord?

Paracord provides a better handle material than the bare metal. I have never held an Airkat knife, but I imagin that the paracord and surgical tubing combo provides a nice cushy grip.
