How many consider putting a slingshot in thier kit?

I was reminded of this when talking to a friend and we swapped stories about using slinkshots to hunt. Me squirrels and rabbits him sentries in VN.

Guns are for show. Knifes are for Pros.

Slingshots are great. Silent, very inexpensive, easily made, doesn't draw attention, and extremely effective; especially on small game. Check out the slingshot article on page 38 of the latest issue of Backwoodsman Magazine (May/June 2000 issue).

Sling shots are a great idea. Dr. Hood recommends them in his Survival Weapons video and advocates carrying surgical tubing in your maxi-kit for trap engines, slingshots and other items such as the "Dell Bow". Not only are slingshots easy to assemble they are fun to practice with. They are great for pest relocation (neighbor's felines or dogs) as well as erradication (rats, mice, and other assorted beasties). I have to be careful however my 4 year old might get the two mixed up and I'll end up doing a lot of explaining to the neighbors....

I own four slingshots and make my own "slings".

I keep a small Y slingshot in my #3 kit, it is similar to Ron's Maxi kit. I keep a Folding Wristrocket in my BOB.

My #2 kit, somewhere in between Ron's Mini and Maxi kits, has a spare slingshot band and a D ring...ala Ron.

All my kits have some surgical tubing and hence I can make a field expedient slingshot anytime.

I do carry some .25" steel and lead shot for ammo in some kits. In my BOB I carry decorative glass marbles too, for ammo. They are cheaper than real marbles. 100 for about $1.

Also, field expedient arrows can be launched by them.

Definitely USEFUL!

I'll let you all know how we used to make slingshots as kids.

Items needed:

Heavy Duty wire clothes hanger
4 to 6 heavy duty rubber bands
The tongue from an old leather shoe
Wire cutters & Needle nose pliers

Take the hanger and cut the straight bottom portion of the hanger off at each end. Place this straight piece of wire between the webs of your thumbs, keeping the thumbs together. Bend upward. You now have a "V" shaped wire. Use the needle nose pliers and bend each end outward forming eyelets. Don't close then yet. Take the rubber bands and tie them together, using square knots(place two rubberbands over each other and pull them together into the square knot). Make two "power bands". Cut a decent sized rectangle from the leather. Heat one end of the scrap hanger over the fire and burn two holes into the leather. Tie a band to each hole. Place the other end of the band into the hanger eyelet. Crimp the eyelet closed. You now have a slingshot that can be carried easily in a pocket, etc.

Disclaimer/Word of Caution: These can cause injury if the rubber bands snap. Be careful. Use your brain when using the slingshot. In other words, if you get hurt, don't come crying to me! Safety glasses are a good idea, now that I think of it. :-)

Surg tube is handy for a lot of things. It`ll hold a broken stock together with a simple wrap and tuck the end under.

It will also clamp irregular objects for gluing.
