Survival story from Vancouver Island !

right on!!! tough old guy!!! made the right decision to stay on the shore, rather than go into the woods.

carvers statement here:

""You've got some rugged country here," said Carver. "If you are losing strength you can't make 20 yards in these primeval forests."

is so true, and i cannot stress it enough: our forests are extremely dense, rough, steep, and extremely difficult to navigate.

Glad it worked out. I would love to read a detailed account of what happened and the day by day. For instance, was he able to use the lifeboat for shelter? And of course, did he have a knife :D

Sounds like he was tough, but also he was being looked after.

He tried to do the right things, was experienced, in shape, had survival supplies (bad luck to lose the backpack) and seemed to know what he was doing.

Too bad he's giving up doing these adventures, instead of getting back on that horse. I'm sure he's got a good set of lessons learned. I bet he would also keep a good quality life vest on complete with essential survival items, so that he's not separated from them. When I used to kayak a lot I used to keep essential items in my vest: stainless steel knife clipped to the outside for ready access, firestarter kit (2 lighters, BSA Hot Spark ferro rod, pjcb, & fatwood), mini trauma kit, compass, signal mirror, safety pins, foil, water treatment tabs, etc. Always with me and never touched. Kept a more complete kit in the boat.

Tough guy who kept his cool and let level-headed thinking prevail. I can't imagine how shaken I might have been after facing so many days of storms alone.

Odd, The man was saved by equipment, his wet suit to be exact, so says the article.

Shelter proves again to be paramount. :D

I hope this stays in the media, I want to know what the RCMP has to say.

My guess is at some time n his past he has been charged with a crime that makes him unable to enter the country, the RCMP are probably just making sure he gets back to the states in one piece.
Still, to get back on original topic, it always pays to have some gear on your person, a well stocked bag can go missing, along with all your gear and hopes of a comfortable wait for rescue.

Sounds like he just didn't enter the country properly, possibly because of some criminal history. Didn't sound like he was in any trouble though. Didn't have much choice in the matter.
