Hey, I just read a story about a guy that went out hunting by Mt. Ranier and was attacked by a cougar. The cougar clawed him across the ass, which ripped open his pockets on the coveralls he was wearing and sent him rolling down an embankment. He lost his compass, matches, and snacks. He wandered around for a couple days and eventually found his way back or was rescued, I can't remember. Anyway, it said that he is an Eagle Scout and was in the armed services and had survival training. I think he had some minor afflictions from exposure, but for the most part he was alright.

So, this made me think of how to prevent loss of crucial gear like knives and metal matches, etc. One idea that I had was to have a small metal match with a lanyard hole in it, and thread it through one of your bootlaces down around the top of your foot so that if they came untied it wouldn't slip off. I think it is really unlikely that you would lose one of your shoes, and it would only be for back-up. You could put a striker on there with it. If you had a metal match and a striker attached in this manner to each of your boots the chances of ever losing both are pretty small.

What do you think????

I think the lesson is:

DON'T MOON A COUGAR! LOL!

Use a fanny pack... Kevlar and Titianium if there is any potential for an ass grabbing feline encounter....

I read a book about SAS operations in Iraq during the Persian Gulf festivities which stated that they tied EVERYTHING to themselves.
