Anybody remember these? They were a compact, 3/4" diameter straw designed for purifying water as you drank it. Do they work? Where can I find one?

Thanks for any info,

Jerry Busse

Jerry, beer keeps you hydrated....why bother with a straw when you can hold the tap open? :)

PS...good talking to ya...looking forward to my BA3

Jerry,
Try this:
http://www.alloysafe.com/.

The Survival Straw is unique and unlike any other product. It purifies 5,000 gallons of drinking water and has an indefinite shelf life. It does not contain carbon or silver. Carbon filters can create a health hazard because the carbon may foster bacteria growth and colony formation. And because it is made of 100% alloy media it filters 100 times longer than carbon filters. The Survival Straw removes chlorine, bad taste, odor, water soluble heavy metals, pesticides, aresenic, mercury (EDB), carcinogens and destroys harmful bacteria and viruses
:D :D

Or this:

FRONTIER™ Emergency Water Filter System The ideal "just in case" filter straw for emergency use when traveling, hiking and fishing. Also ideal as a backup filter for multi-day backpacking trips. The Frontier Filter can be used to drink from any bottle or cup, or directly from water sources. Removes contaminates down to 2 microns in size including wide spread pathogens such as giardia, cryptosporidium and large bacteria. Frontier's ultra lightweight and compact package size fits in the smallest day pack, waist pack or pocket.

Hey Jerry, whassup.Yep,I have used the survival straw but only on a few occasions both of which allowed for little space for gear. One time in particular involved a lost canoe and all our gear for two,all we had to keep hydrated was the straw in which we filled a small drybag to drink from.It worked as we never got sick and kept us hydrated.Only bad thing is you have to suck real hard (no comments please LOL!)to get the flow started in the straw. All in all its a good backup thats quick and easy.

In case someone knows... how do these water purifier straws work internally?

i bought a couple from brigade quartermaster, i made them part of my emergency gear, and havent had to use them as i usually carry a larger filter and iodine with me. they are for emergency use only. i read an article some where that they tend to clog up fairly quickly. you may do better with one of the smaller sized water filters.

I would really doubt there claim of 5000 gal. Most of these tests are done with city tap water. Even with city water I still doubt the 5000 claim. What is the pore size? If the water you are treating has Any
floties in it they will clog Any filter very quickly. What ever you get use a pre-fliter,it will double the life of any filter you use.

Yes, if the water is cloudy - has suspended particles. Use cloth or something to pre-filter it a little and the straw will last much longer.

You are talking about the old model with the red mouthpiece and black body? It disappeared from the market for a while, and came back as the skinny tube with a purifier "pod" at the end.

A couple of fabrics that can be used for pre-filtering the crud from water are:
1. No-See-Um netting as used in tent doors & windows
2. pantyhose material (use NIB pantyhose if you can ;))
While they will keep the chunks out of your filter element, they don't necessarily stop the finer silt particles.

For the woodworkers in the crowd, you can also wrap pantyhose material around your Shop-Vac filters to keep sawdust from clogging the paper filter. You can get about four wrappers from a pair of pantyhose.

Wouldn't coffee filter papers also work as a pre-filter? They are light, could serve as fire-starting tinder or maybe emergency toilet paper, and are cheap.

Hey, if you're careful you can use one three times, if you get the order correct (first filter the water, then dry and wipe, last light the fire. Got that?):barf:
