What do you all carry for writing in your BOB's? Just a plain old pencil or pen - or something that is a little more robust?

Can't beat a plain old pencil. I carry a short golf pencil in my pocket as part of my edc gear. I make a small note pad the size of a business card by folding a sheet of computer paper 3 times, staple the top and trim with sissors to card size. That way I always have paper and pencil.

A pencil has unlimited shelf life, no leaks, does not dry up if not used for years, and can be scraped with a knife for dry graphite lube in emergency. I once watched my dad take apart a gummed up fishing reel on a rivver bank and use pencil dust to lube it. Worked like a charm.

Love pencils.

wooden construction pencil. It lasts for ever and works. I dont see the need for using a tacticool titanium clad steel core heavily armoured fighting pen in the woods.

I carry a pencil, a mini sharpie, and a run-of-the-mill bic pen.

The pencil is key for writing on my waterproof paper. I suppose you could use it for emergency tinder if you had to...

The sharpie is handy if you need to write on a plastic (or other smooth) surface.

The bic pen is multi-purpose. It can be a straw, good for blowing into your tinder when you're trying to get a fire going. You could use it as a dropper for your Iodine when purifying water. And, get this, it can be used for writing (in the right conditions).

wood pencil, a pen, and a wax crayon.

crayon can serve dual purposes to help start a fire. also works well when marking wood.

I have a Mil-Tac TDP-1 pen in my EDC bag, modded to accept a fisher space pen insert. I carry on my person a Schrade tactical pen (a less expensive knock-off of the Mil-Tac) also with a fisher insert.

I have a few loops that need clips to hold my writing utensils on my BOB. Recommendation for clipping a pencil to my bag?

Don't forget a mini-size pencil sharpener. Use it to sharpen the pencil, and make shaved tinder from small twigs. Cheap, light and easy.

i keep crayons and pencils handy.
the crayons can be used to help light a fire.
the pencils are low tech and function

TTD has a great idea for making a clip.

Another option might be to buy a small pocket clip from a knifemaking supply and screw & epoxy it to your pencil.

My wife saves the plastic caps from her used-up eyeliner pencils for me. I slip these over my pencils to keep them from getting graphite dust all over the stuff in my kit. Keeps the point protected as well. -- Bear

Pencil, fine point marker, and a moleskine notebook. I write for a living, and I'm always stopping to take notes and jot down new ideas. A notebook and pen are core components of my EDC! I also stuff a few business cards in my PSK. They make useful impromptu tinder or small writing surfaces, and they could also be used to mark a trail.

All the best,

- Mike

Don't forget that a stub pencil is the perfect thing to wrap duct tape around.

I make quill pens and poke myself for a little blood (ink) as needed...

Seriously, I carry a #2 pencil and a few water proof sheets from that company that makes waterproof notebooks. One or two kits (the larger ones) have a retractable ball point pen which may have some use other than writing but a pencil and waterproof paper is the ticket.

I have a pencil, a mini-size Sharpie, a retractable ball-point pen, and a small 3"x3" sticky-note pad in my daypack.

Stay sharp,
