Survive GSO Knives , what size ?

Only a few months back I came across Survive Knives . They looked great , so I got busy . I read as many reviews and articles as I could find and watched a lot of Youtube vids . I even managed to get myself a GSO 5 :D

Now I know Survive is a fairly new company and I know all about the growing pains that Guy is going through (making knives slow to get ) . So I don't know just how many different models are already out there .

So here's the thing . I really like my GSO 5 so far , but between this weather and being busy I haven't had as much knife time as I'd like . The whole GSO line looks great and what I'd like to hear from people who have them is what size do you have ? Have you tried other sizes ? What size do you find best for general hiking and bushcraft , camping and so on ?

I'd love to just buy one of each , but that's a luxury I can't afford . And I don't want to have to buy and sell several when maybe some who have different sizes could give some insight about how they like them . I see many GSO 4.1 for sale , but never see the 5 , 5.1 , 6 or 7-7 listed anywhere . Have some of those never been released before ? I gather the GSO 3.5 is new and never been made before . But I thought several of the other sizes have .

I appreciate your input .

I have owned the Necker (I), 4.1, 5.1, & 10 and am awaiting a Necker II. The 6 and 7/7 releases were quite recent and the Necker II and 3.5 are not yet completed for release. The others come up occasionally for sale, mostly 4.1's and 5/5.1's as these are more a little common, probably because more were made and sold. More of all will be coming, according to the company owner.

IMHO, you definitely have a preferred model  I found the GSO-4.1 handle a bit small and not as comfortable as some of my other knives in that size range though i had no complaints with the steel or construction - good stuff. It was nice and light for how thick/strong, a good general-utility size.

The 5.1 is much more comfortable in hand and your GSO-5 has the same handle. The 5.1 is a little longer because of the added choil, and heavier without the 4.1's skeletonized handle, but makes a great woodcraft knife, able to handle tasks both large and small.

I don't have much use for the mid-size 6 & 7/7 (the 5.1 is already about as long as the 6), but the GSO-10 is an excellent tool for de-limbing & debarking trees, lighter and more versatile than most hatchets. It isn't as light & long as a true machete but can still clear a trail. Since much of my recent tasks have been clearing my property lines and cutting fence-posts and firewood, the GSO-10 is my most used knife out of doors.

I look forward to trying out the NeckerII for smaller tasks as the original Necker design just didn't suit me.

You mentioned reading reviews and watching videos, so you've probably already encountered my submissions. My youtube handle is Chamdar17. Have a great Winter!

I agree with everything chiral.grolim says regarding 5.1 and the 4.1. I expect to get my 10 any day, so I do not yet have much to say other than I can't wait to develop an opinion and share it with you. I carry my 4.1 a lot as an EDC. I find that handle to be pretty comfortable, but my hands are not terribly large. I also do not have, nor have I had, many knives in this size/style. The 5.1 I like very much in 3V. The handle is comfortable, and you can thump on this knife all day, every day. I have the 7.7 with the false grind. I purchased this knife to carry on my weight bearing vest. I think it is a good mix of usable size for survival situations, but it will also have better stabbing performance than the 5.1 in a tactical situation. The false grind lightens this up compared to the classical 7/7 design. I have not used this knife much yet, but I agree with chiral that this size does not provide much over the 5.1 except weight. Chiral posted a review here in the review section of BF that I recently bumped in anticipation of the GSO 10s being shipped.
