So I noticed that Survive had some GSO 3.5 factory seconds in stock this morning with a 20% discount. I picked up one for each of my boys ages 6 and 7 years old in CPM 20-CV. We just got back from a weekend camping trip and they wanted do camp chores like battoning, feather sticking, and prepping firewood. My Ratmandu was too large for them and I have other knives like Bark River Necker II's, but the edges seem to be too thin for batoning. I have some Fallknivens, Bark River Bravo's, but all seem to be too large for them. The Fallkiven F1 seems like it might work for them, but for about $20 more the GSO 3.5's don't seem like a bad deal.

These are the first Survive knives that I've purchased or will have handled for that matter. Do you think they'll work for kids? How are the ergonomics on them? I guess I'll find out in a few weeks after they arrive, but thought I'd ask if anyone have kids that use them.

Why do you insist on teaching them to baton ? In any case I have a big hand and it's ok for me but 6 and 7 ? Might be a bit big for them.

My seven year old has had a 3.5 since they came out and it fits his hand well. I started him with a spyderco mule and have slowly been working with him. The good thing is my son can use his GSO 3.5 and Halestorm kydex sheath a couple more years before he passes it down to his little brother and both of them will never wear either one out. When they are ready to move on it will be a handy knife for my tackle box.

The handles should work well for them, depending on the material you chose. The only thing I would worry about is them losing them.

It's something they've been bugging me about and wanting to use their little Buck folders on. I figured they'll grow into them and would be fine as they get older, but wanted something they could use this season.

That's what I figure as well. They can keep the 3.5 for years and when they get bigger they can upgrade to the 4.1. It'll last them a life time as long as they aren't lost.

These will be with me, until I'm certain they won't lose them. I'll bring them out when we are doing camp chores and put them back in my pack after we're done. I think they'll probably be able to handle them when they are around 10 without me having to worry about them getting lost. Only time will tell:)
