So I know a lot of you have kids. I was wondering what the ages are and the gear you are getting them. What are you teaching them?

I have 2 boys. one is 5 and the other is 18 months.

My oldest Cole has been hiking, backpacking and camping since he was 5 days old. He did his first overnight at 5 months and multi day backpack trip at 9 months.

I have been teaching him elementary skills that are important (or what I consider important)

No running in the woods, unless you are in danger. Seen to many people fall over stupid stuff and get hurt bad.
do not walk with an open knife. Not until he gets older.
Look for animals, signs, tracks and movement.
respect the environment. leave it better than you found it.

Gear wise

He has an Esee Izula (he wants a 3.5 gso. LOL)
(Mountain hardwear) mountain Goat sleeping bag
Deuter backpack
Big agnes sleeping pad
good hiking boots
Fire start kit
GSO cook cup and ti spoon

Knife skills been teaching him how to properly hold the knife, small carvings, and how to take care of it (cleaning, rough sharpening)

I would love to hear what you guys do with your kids.

Thats awesome! My oldest is 7 next is about to be fove and I have a 10 month old. Girl, boy, girl. The older two have been taught some basic archer skills and I made them "toy" bows. They also love fishing. They use my ultralight spinning rods. Indont trust them with knives yet. Once summer rolls down I am going to take them camping for the first time

Very cool thread! I think outdoors time is the best bonding time there is. My kiddo is three and he doesn't have any gear as of yet but he will soon. Right now he carries his Gerber with no edge but he is super proud of it. Even as young as he is I've been teaching him basics of how to avoid injury. He fishes almost every weekend with me. He has a zebco dock demon, which I steal when I hit the trail.(great for the thick brush areas my ugly stick can't fish.)

This one is his first fish. Caught on my reel, brought in while I held the rod and he reeled. :) talk about one proud daddy.

with brains like sponges that have to be filled up .Fill them up with good info !

If the hidden purpose of this thread is to make some of us realize how much older we are as compared to the average age of the most on here, consider mission accomplished :D

Otherwise, enjoy them lil ones and if I could have one impossible wish granted, I would wish to go back in time and play with my Son some more when he was around 2-3 YO ;)

Love this pic^ :)

I have 3 girls, aged 7.5, 5, and 1.75 years. YOu can hear their voices occasionally in my Chamdar17 videos. The oldest has an Opinel and a green Izula, has a small flashlight but prefers her reading-light, has a toy bow and a fishing rod but we haven't made it out fishing much, need to restock our pond... We've been camping a few years ago but nowadays are too busy and we live out in the country anyway (in fact we lost a few hens to a fox-rampage just this evening). She can build a fire (we heat with wood in the winter) and swig a hammer and use a saw as well as a power-drill  She's awesome at catching chickens.

The next in line is a bit more shy of tools, can't be trusted with a sharp knife just yet but also likes to hammer on things with a hammer I gave her, I'll try training her on some of the other basic skills soon.

The youngest is potty-trained and awesome at blowing out candles ;)

Here's the oldest watching me decapitate a skinned goat:

That was taken on fathers day this year. We've had matching boots for a few years now. He just had to have a pair like dad. Almost always makes me smile when I put my boots on for work, even at 2 or 3 in the morning.

Great thread idea!
I have an 8 year old girl, and a 3 year old beast that get out often, hiking, fishing, and geocaching together.
They have a blast learning 'survival' stuff. I quiz them while out on hikes and make it fun for them.
Geocaching has been a great activity, they learn to read a map, follow a gps, and in the process I teach them about where to find water, edible plants, where would be a good shelter, etc.

My family is an outdoor family. I've posted my son a few times but I'm not sure I posted my daughter. Both love to fish and hunt with me. Camping goes along with that. My son is a knife nut like me. Izula for the land but his favorite is an orange Spyderco Delica I bought him. Gotta keep the kids outdoors

My wife and I will likely start trying for kids in a yr, it's tremendously reassuring to see all you proud parents teaching your kids great values!!! Hats off to you all!

Teach me your ways!

Well, each kid has started walking (I mean full-on prefers walking to crawling and doesn't need your help to do it) during their 8 month out of the womb - lots of falling down, but they don't give up, they get annoyed when we insist that they crawl the staircase until demonstrating proficiency.

But for potty-training, I hear it is easier with girls than boys, and I believe it seeing as I remember learning to use the potty, and it wasn't recent ;)
But kids give pretty clear signs when they are discharging, we've just watched for those signs and then given them words to associate with what's happening and encouragement towards more hygenic behavior ;) In other words, we let them run around diaper-less a lot, and then swoop them away to the potty-chair when it's time, repeating words like, "Pee-pee, potty, sit-down," etc. They catch on fast.

I say "we" but know that it is my amazing wife who accomplishes most of this

It's the blowing out of candles that impresses me! This kid is a pro :) I've seen young ones struggle for minutes to target their efforts appropriately, but she's learning even how to modulate different levels of force as needed for different distances, so that she doesn't send wax everywhere when blowing out a big candle close up.

Congratulations!

I second this ^ Congratulations, dkblade! half-way there

Very cool, Chiral ( and Mrs. Grolim :))

Whether it's outdoor activities or your career or raising kids, you seem like the kind of person who does everything at the very highest level. People like you give me faith in humanity
