Surviving a bear attack

That was a HUGE bear  You never know what you'll encounter while out in an area like that. obsolutely unbelievable.

A zoo in northern NJ had the largest brown bear in captivity, it weighed 2000 lbs.It was enormous with claws like bananas !! Seeing that one up close I'd hate to meet one that big in the wild.Any gun you had would seem far too small !!

Just finished reading a book about bear attacks. The author supports bear spray and gives advice about choosing one. The chapter which made an impression on me was "hunters and bears". I used to think the 12 gauge "bear banger" was enough, but one guy had a large male grizzly charge him starting at about 300 yards, he put six .416 remington magnum rounds into it before it stopped. I bought my spray the next day.

J-dogg,

Black bear feces is filled with berry parts and small animal bones. Brown bear feces is filled with shredded nylon, buttons, zippers, and smells like hot sauce... (just kidding)

Bear spray can work but in a serious bear attack the victim only figures out what is happening as the slobber hits them. The same goes for firearms. Countless bear attack survivors relate that they couldn't have gotten off a shot.

This past year I talked to a survivor. He was a guide and was attacked so fast he could barely raise his rifle and fire. He got chewed on pretty good as his hunter recovered from panic and hit the bear with an under powered rifle shot. The bear turned on the hunter and the guide recovered his rifle and killed the bear with a head shot.

The muskeg up there is very spongy and silent. Bears get very close before they attack. I don't know what the solution is but I know hunting up there this past fall I felt alot safer in a group of four or five guys armed to the teeth. Mac

I forget where it happened, some where up "north", but a guy had an enormous grizzly or kodiak charge him, and the guy, who had something along the lines of an elephant gun, shot the bear clean through the heart, and it finally collapsed in a heap and skidded to a stop in front of him, ala Dances with Wolves with the buffalo. After they cut the bear up, the doc performing the autopsy said that the bears heart exploded immediately after the guy plugged him in the heart... at about 50 ft from the guy!
