Survivor Story

You can go a heck of along while with no food if you have lots of water to drink. She crawled until she got to a unlimited supply of water. She had her whistle to signal with when search party got near. I'd say she did some thinking about it. About the only thing she could have added is fire source to get a signal fire going. With all that's going on there, the first sign of new smoke, she'd have had a platoon of smoke jumpers dropping in on her! I'm sure one of them would have had a granola bar or slim jim on them!

In this case, forest fires were near, so a signal fire may or may not have worked if not done correctly.

Mental aspects are prime. How many stories have we seen about folks who die becasue they will not admit that they need to adapt their behavior to new realities?

It's about forty years since Lathrop wrote Hypothermia: Killer of the Unprepared. He opens with the story of the two young, fit adults who died of hypothermia with packs full of top-notch camping gear. They were, BY GOD, going to make it to the top of the pass, even when the 60's and hazy sun turned into forties and rain. They were found dead in t-shirts and shorts with all that gear - tents, sleeping bags, pads, stoves, food - still in their packs.

If you make a signal fire the Gov't will probably fine you !!
There are whistes and there are whistles . The one I have is supposed to be the loudest , Storm, but many are not much more than toys !

A good, shrill whistle will still make lots of noise when your throat is too dry and you're too exhausted to even speak above a croak or a whisper. Plus, it's an unnatural sound in the wilderness.

I have my whistle on
my shoulder strap of my pack
all I have to do it turns head to be able to blow my whistle
if it anywhere else you cannot reach it if you fall down and hurt your self
where do you keep yours
in your pack somewhere
.
test yourself by lying down with your pack on your back
put that whistle on your shoulder strap

I don't know that a signal fire would be a very good idea in any case if you're injured and in a potential wildfire situation. Fires can get out of control very fast, and if you're injured you may not get it out. Then, you're lost, injured, and in the middle of a potential wildfire.

That's a bit strange! Why did the boy have to have a note ?? He could talk, just find someone and ask for help ??
Somebody explain that to me.
