I've searched around the forum and haven't been able find any posts on this one.

Recently I caught the survivorman episode where he makes the igloo on Baffin Island. It looked like his knife, blade included was made out of bone. Does anyone know what he used in this episode, and if it was bone where one might get such a thing. thx, gerry

its a remington knife that you find at wallmart (at least here in Canada), it isn't a bone handle, its a cheap knife, but does the work pretty good, I got one as a gift for a little guy.

Sorry I made a mistake its a Winchester Hunting Knife WN-1339 (got mixed up between my shotguns :))

Here is a link to one on an online store but go to your local wallmart, i see you're in Ontario.

No he means season 1.Not 3.Yes it was made of bone.
I have no Idea how to carve one.Ask a native Inuit.

You don't really carve one so much as grind it to shape with a rock. Depending on what bone you use, it will have one side convex and one side concave as it will be the inside of the bone sans the marrow.

So the blade is made of bone? That's very interesting. I never know that could be done. I wonder how it cuts.

Deer (elk, moose, caribou, etc.) legbone is a useful material. Early man made spearpoints, darts, arrowheads, knives, fishhooks and gorges from them.

Both deer bone and flint knives can be found (newly made) on eBay and other places on the web.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I knew somebody here would know...and yes it was the bone version that really caught my eye. I've always liked traditional vs modern gear but these are "really" traditional.:)

There is no way in hell I could ever make one myself but after seeing that pic posted above by Codger I'm pretty sure I'm going to end up owning one. Now that I know what to look for the hunt is on...

Statius: Rattlesnake point is one of my favourite places to go (especially the hike through the canyon to Crawford lake and back). I belong to a small group who hike every morning on the Bruce Trail with our dogs. So if you're ever in the area we go there on Mondays.

thanks again guys, gerry
