This was probably covered before I started visiting regularly. But, I was watching Survivorman tonight and he was in Labrador Canada. He was cutting metal, meat, wood with a fixed blade knife. It looked like it had a 5 to 6 inch blade with a blood groove like on the Bark River Boone. Also had a butt cap.

Just curious, anyone know what knife he was using?

Thanks

Bill

It is a Buck 119 'Special' with a 6" clip blade of 420HC steel with a black phenolic handle and aluminum guard and pommel and weighs 7.5 oz. It comes with either a black leather or a black nylon sheath. It lists for $81, yet WallyWorld continues to sell it for <$34. There is an upgrade version, the 119BRS, that has a rosewood handle, brass guard and pommel, and burgundy leather sheath. It weighs 10.5 oz and lists for $119. The knives are made in the USA, while the leather sheaths are from Mexico - and the nylon is from the PRC, I think. Great classic knife!

He always uses a Leatherman Wave, and usually also a Buck 119 Special, though he sometimes trades it for something else. :)

I really don't know how "real" Survivorman is, but it seems more real than Bear Grylls show. You can tell because Les Stroud looks pretty roughed up after a night of sleeping in a tent.

Bear looks like he has just been prepped for a photo shoot. Totally staged and he sleeps in a 5 star hotel at night.

He also sometimes uses a Victorinox multitool, or some other sort of Swiss Army Knife.

I don't know how real it is either, but I like the show. There is an Alaska episode in which he uses a Buck 119 quite a bit to batton firewood, clean a fish carcass that he found laying on a rock, and for a number of other things.

I think it is probably fairly real. BUT......he has backup in case things don't go as planned. If you notice if he gets into real trouble the backup team bails him out, and it does happen. In real life unfortunately there isn't always a backup team.
