I recently bought a brand new 940-2 in a an ebay auction for around 120. I knew it was a little fishy but I pulled the trigger, plus the seller has a 14 day money back guarantee. Anyway, I received the knife today and I had a few questions.
1) I believe it is a real Benchmade but I have never owned a 940, so I will post some pics to see if you guys see any red flags.
2) My pocket clip just says "benchmade" and every other 940 I have seen says "benchmade usa"? Is that abnormal?
3) The axis lock on this knife is super stiff to the point that I cannot flip the blade in and out by just holding down the axis lock and swinging it. Is this normal? It is not the actual axis bar that locks the knife in place, but the axis in which the blade spins is stiff.
Thank you guys for helping me out.

1) it's real, I had one just like it
2) Normal for this model
3) it will break in with use

You can sleep tonight.

Ok thanks guys for putting my mind at ease. Just one more question. There is a wire on the axis lock (shown on the second image below) that is not on my 8 year old gripitian. I know i'm being obsessive but is that normal? Thanks

That is the Omega spring. The Grip should have it as well. Maybe your not see it? Or it is broken or missing...But, inherent to all Axis locks.

This, also, is normal. It's real. You can relax and take delight in getting a good deal on one.;)

You're not in Canada are you? BM cranks the pivot down for shipment to us up here in "Nanny-land" and just requires us to adjust the pivot to our liking. However, on another forum, someone else asked the same question about tight pivots and they were somewhere in the States so it might not be a regional issue.

I bought my 940-2 from a local knife store and the owner had already loosened up the pivot, but I adjusted it to my liking anyway. It is certainly a nice knife, and yes the omega spring is visible on the 940, the 556 as well as the 580, so I would hazard a guess it's visible on all axis lock knives as well.

Sorry for the late response Colin. I'm in Southwest US. Now that I have loosened the pivot screw and played around with it, it is buttery smooth.

Make sure you didn't loosen it to much by seeing how much up and down and side to side play you have. When you loosen the pivot, sometimes you end up with more wiggle. It's a sweet spot, very precise where the pivot should be torqued.

Great point YM!
It still amazes me how the tiniest adjustment makes a big difference.
Blue Loctite is your friend after the sweet spot is found also.
