Would like to hear opinions of the Suuntoo compasses, one that I'm interested in has a lanyard and is encased in an aluminum case, anyone know anything about it? Sorry, I don't recall the model name. Thanks!

Not familiar with the model you are talking about, but Suunto makes very good compasses.

Silva also makes nice compasses. I like the ones that you can adjust the declination so you won't have to think when trying to orient your map to true North.

Sounds like their military model. Takes a lot of beating to break one, I think I have four of those.

I Have both the Suunto MC2DL&the Silva Ranger, both with plastic cases. Of the two I've had the Silva a lot longer, and have found it to be very durable, easily adjusted for declination, and damn near impossible to destroy. I think the Suunto looks a lot less durable, but if you have one with an aluminum case it sounds like a good deal. Good Luck

As a wildlife biologist, I use these often. I also use a Clino that looks just like it.
I really like them. They are very durable and I like the accuracy, as you look through the device itself. They are heavier than the common Ranger compasses, though and a little more difficult to use on a topo map due to the fact you can't look through the case, etc.
That price is a little high, Ben Meadows (where I purchase a lot of my gear) sells them for less, about $100 for the declination adjustable model.

The one I prefer is the Silva Ranger with declination adjustment and built in clinometer. I have had several and only broke one, but I use it almost every day for 5 years, and can be very hard on gear. I got grit in the bezel and it didn't want to rotate anymore. Also since I was going up and down between extreems of elevation in very short periods, I got a bubble in one. I still think they are the best for the dollor, around $45. There are much more expensive compasses, like the Brunton Pro series at around $250 dollors, but I would probably keep it locked in a safe at that price.
