Suunto Observer and Vector Watches??

Hey all! I posted a question a while back asking for suggestions on outdoor watches. After deliberation, I am quite interested in both the Vector and Observer. Both seem to have the features I want (time, compass, barometer). I have tried both on for size briefly (mainly from passers-by that had them on). The Vector is almost too big, but I could live with it. The Observer is just about right, but more expensive and heavier. I'm looking for feedback from people that have these watches. One other thing I have noticed is that the Vector has a small leveling bubble for use with the compass and also has a miniature active display for the barometer for "at a glance" reading. Does the observer have this feature? Does it matter? Let me know. Other suggestions welcome as well.

cheers

I have had the Vector for several years now and use it daily and camping. I like it. It is large but I have gotten use to it. It functions well. If you have any specific questions about it let me know. I have never used the Observer so I can't make comparisons, sorry.

I have a several year old Vector that works great. What really impressed me was Suunto's service. My Vector was in a bit of an accident (think vechicle door) which destroyed the display and damaged the case. I could see some bits of the display still changing so the main board seemed to be at least somewhat functional. Sent it to Suunto and they repaired and returned it in a week or so for something less than $40.00 ($38 and change IIRC). Nice unit, great service.

I've had my Vector long enough to change the battery twice. Very nice to be able to do this myself, as easy as changing a flashlight battery.

The watch has functioned flawlessly I tend to wear it more in cold weather, but when I first got it I wore it through a long sweaty summer and it took it all in stride. It's my beater watch and it's so light, I could forget I'm wearing it, so it's taken few hits.

So far I am leaning towards the Vector. So, changing the battery is pretty easy huh? I appreciate the comments. Please keep them coming!

If I recall correctly, Esav Benyamin has never changed the battery in a Photon II -- he refuses to even try. So if he says it's as easy as changing the batteries in a flashlight, he must mean the kind of flashlight with a tailcap that unscrews. :)

The Vector has a quarter-sized plate on the back, with a slot that the edge of a nickel can fit in.
A short turn and the plate comes off, the battery can be lifted out, and a new one put in.

Screw the Photon II !!

Those who have tried to master the art
Of taking this tiny flashlight apart
Will know what I mean when I growl and say,
I should have just thrown it away.

Tiny parts scattered across the table,
It’s a challenge to me to see if I’m able
To put them all back together again –
I hope I will, but I don’t know when.

They’re in a box now, hidden away,
Awaiting the light of a sunnier day.
Without better light and a magnifying glass,
This is a test I never will pass.

I need a new keychain LED.
Can anyone suggest a good one for me?
I’ve bought my last Photon, and that’s a fact,
Until they get together their act,
And find a way to replace the power
Without causing the replacer to glower.

There was a time, with fingers more nimble,
I could handle this chore,
Now each finger feels like a thumb with a thimble,
And I just can’t do tiny parts anymore.
I’ll go for AA, AAA, AAAA, or N,
But I don’t think I’ll want tiny buttons again.
