I am looking for a knife with a hollow handle that can be mounted on a walking staff like a spear.

I want something for personal protection while backcountry hiking and therefore it needs to be light weight.

Does anyone have any ideas.

I know boar hunters and some bear hunters in certain Canadian provinces hunt with spears so there must be some suppliers out there.

The coldsteel Bushman will work as a pretty good spearhead and its cheap 10 and not very heavy butfor a better knife you should check out the Randall 18 and Chris Reeve which are a more expensive but are a lot more durable.

Byrd Machine & Tool in Orlando makes two sizes of hollow staffs threaded for the Randall md.18. I talked to them at one of the Blade shows and they said they would thread one for a Reeves. There have been several of thier staffs on ebay at different times. I have two one five foot and one three foot. I had to sell the knives that went with them. But will keep the staffs until I can replace the knives.

Cheers,

ts

Guns are for show. Knifes are for Pros.

This looks like the perfect excuse to buy a Chris Reeves Project I or II.

And so, to all outdoor folks, the knife is the most important item of equipment.

How about going the other direction?!?!

Make or buy a sleeve for the staff for a KNIFE HANDLE to fit INTO! Then you have a strong knife with a solid handle.

I carry a couple of knives with cord wrapped handles so that the tang is exposed when unwrapped. These can then be quickly and easily fitted into a slot in my staff for a quick spear. The cordage could be used to tie them in place. They also have holes in the tangs so they could also be pinned in place.

Cold Steel has some great alternatives with the Bushman being very inexpensive.

Hope that gives you some more ideas!

Good luck! and do let us know what you came up with!

On the Hoodlums forum BJ the Bear did a neat thing with his broken CS Bushman ( http://pub1.ezboard.com/fhoodlumsquestionsandanswers.showMessage?topicID=841.topic )which I thought was pretty cool. I might even buy a Bushman and use it for just that purpose. Further, I think that the old Swedish Mauser bayonets are hollow handle and could be shortened for just such purposes. Drill a couple of holes for screws and have at it. I think the Bushman isn't as narrow in the handle as the bayonet either if you needed to do a field expedient walking stick (your's broke

). Just some thoughts.

I saw the Byrd on ebay and its a neat idea, I just can't see doing my 18 that way though.

Okay, I'm familiar w/the Bushman, but not the Chris Reeve or Randall 18. Hollow handle knives generally make me quite nervous, but these are some high grade makers you're mentioning - where are their (Randall's) tangs?!

Plainsman has a good idea there.

I have a Livesay G-45 neck knife that I think could serve well as a (small) spear blade.

It wouldn't take long to lash it onto the end of a staff (maybe with wire). It has a pronounced 'knob' and a lanyard hole which could make things easier. The cord on the handle could be used in an emergency.

At $22, it is also very useful as a utility neck knife!

Hi,

I can't see myself attaching an Chris Reeve Project 1 or 2 or an Randall Model 18 to a threaded walking staff to use it for throwing etc.

For me it feels like using a painting from Picasso and glueing it to a piece of plywood and cutting it up to make a jig saw puzzle, one just should not do this.

Carry your CR or Randall knife for "normal" work as it is a very important piece of equipement in any survival situation (the most important perhaps) and carry a Cold Steel Bushman costing only $10-15 for putting on a stick/walkingstaff to use as a spear if you like chasing boar bears etc.

I have made a walking staff from a 1 1/4"-1 1/2" thick Ratan (we call it Rotan in Dutch) stick and sanded the "point" to fit exactly in the inside of my CS Bushman.
The walking staff is about 5' long and when fitted with the Bushman makes for a formidable spear/stabbing instrument.

The first time I sanded the point to fit the inside of the Bushman grip the fit was to good and it took a heavy vise and my full 250 pounds weight and mussle to get it of the staff it was almost a suction fit.

I'll try making a picture of it soon and post it on my photopoint side.

By the way the upper part of the stick has about 100 foot of 2 mm black nylon rope fitted around it to form a nice gripping area.
That rope is ideal for using in a survival situation as a fishing line, building shelter etc.

Still I'd rather go after a boar (or the like) with a single shot 12 (16 or 20) gauge shotgun with slugs or buckshot.
I once (30 years ago) had a wild boar trying to do bad things to me and my father because she thought we wanted to do her babies harm and my fathers 16 gauge Merkel superpose ended the argument when my father pulled both barrels when she bit in the muzzle.
I wouldn't have liked to end that encounter with a spear I'm not in the Rambo league, never was and never will be
