I grew up using a Sven saw and I knew it as a great piece of camping gear. I just bought my first one after borrowing my dad's over the years. Put it together as I have in the past and the blade was like a wet noodle. Previous models came with the blade already locked into place by a "permanent" pin but this one came with a nut and bolt. The blade has two holes where you are meant to lock it in place. This is where I think the problem is. From fiddling with this thing for awhile I determined that the correct placement of the hole should be in between the two it came with, no bueno. I even skyped with my dad to verify this saw was sub par, he agreed something was amiss.

Has anyone else had this issue with the newer 21" Sven saws?

Yes. It seems as though a batch was made with the holes drilled in the wrong place.

Would just drilling a new hole fix the issue?

Only problem I have with my Sven, is losing the dang wingnut.

Yes. As long as the factory hole isn't so close to where it's supposed to be that it would cause structural issues. However, the couple I saw with misplaced holes would have been just fine to drill the appropriate hole in 'em and call it good enough. In the same batch, however, were ones that were totally fine. I think they were more of an anomaly. A jig must have gotten bumped or something at the factory.
