First time I am posting here but I have been lurking from time to time and learned a lot about knives and steel and got to work with some makers here.
Long story short, I like the Svord tempsky bowie knife and think it could be nice to add for the sake to a bowie (I never had the chance to have one), but I do have some questions about specs:
- Is it really L6? none of the websites mentioned anything
- for the ones who have one, what is the blade height near the guard. and at the swedge edge (right before it drops)?

From the pics I can't tell. sometimes they look the same width/height and sometimes it looks like a wider blade up front.

Thank you in advance
Cedar

Don't know about that particular knife but just wanted to welcome you to BF :)

Thank you all for the welcome!
I am asking about this knife because I am not sure how the balance would be with such a big blade and specially it has the guard..so your hand position is somehow limited.

I already ordered it and we will see when I get I guess...that is the only way to feel it by hand and check it out more. I hope I will like it. I will let you know for sure.
Stay tuned with my first impression once I get it!

Look on You Tube for "Kings of the Wild". It is a British chef and a NZ Hunter, who uses a Svord bowie for just about everything. I have one and for me it felt good in the hand. John

they say it's a similar steel to l6, might even actually be..... but ive read enough to get the impression it's darn close or the same steel from a different steel maker...you following? you are correct that no one i found on a quick look has it listed other than high carbon or a similar description. i own a bunch of svords, but not this one. the steel works well...holds a decent edge and is easy to sharpen...all things being relative of course.

sorry don't own one, so i can't tell you the measurement side of your question.

Hi All,
I just received the knife!! Man what a beast.
First, the measurements:
Blade height near the handle/guard: 1.75 inches
Blade height near the swedge: 2 inches
Spine thickness: 0.22 inches
Handle material: kind of hard wood
Edge: seems like a zero edge (no micro bevel) - or fully convex
Balance: 2 inches in front of the guard.

For now, it is a keeper for sure.
the thickness is where I like my big knives to be (not too thick but still has mass to it to chop for this size).

It is been 2 weeks i am trying to post back and cloudfare is blocking me.
A workaround is to post a short text instead...so here I am posting in seperate posts.

The steel is L6 or at least a part of L6 family.

I called the maker Bryan Baker and he confirmed that he is using L6 for it.
I said that the website always refers to it as "Swedish high carbon steel".
His answer was because he doesn't want to be more specific so people will focus only on performance -
what he assure is that all his carbon steel have nickel on them. He is using 15N20 and L6 only for carbon steel.

...after I got the knife and had the chance to use a little and since I am curious to know what exactly this steel composition..
So I took the knife to a lab testing and they analyzed the steel content:
- Ni: 1.40%
- Mn: 0.30%
- Cr: 0.41%
- Mo: 0.09%
- Ag (silver): 0.13%
- Cu: 0.22%
- Ti: 0.10%
- Si: 0.21%
I think the Titanium element is very interesting.
Not sure if this is enough amount to add toughness as well!
The Cu add more corrosion resistant but not sure about the Ag. anyone knows?

Both Von Tempsky Bowies look tough as nails. They should serve any sane person very well in real world use.
I have heard they can be a little rough around the edges. But for me, in a knife like this, that can be easily overlooked. As long as the performance is there.

I have had one of each in the shopping cart on several different occasions. Just never hit Buy. One of these days I will take the plunge.

Good luck with yours. Keep us informed on your thoughts.

it is definitly not l6 or 15n20 , what is that?
